Jacksonville Jaguars 2008 NFL Record: 5-11 | Jacksonville Jaguars ATS (Against The Spread): 4-12
The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off of a very disappointing 2008 season, one in which they had been predicted to compete for the Super Bowl. Injuries slowed them down in a variety of positions, as did the underperformance of many players on the club. David Garrard lost his magic, throwing 13 interceptions with only 15 touchdowns. The offense finished the season ranked 24 th in the league in points, despite Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor being a dynamic 1-2 combination. The usually stout defense ranked 21 st in points allowed on the year. They were stronger as a unit against the run but didn’t generate consistent pressure on the quarterback to disrupt an opponent’s passing game.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 2009 PREVIEW
The 2009 version of the Jacksonville Jaguars is bound to be a lot better than the 2008 squad. Only going 5-11 in 2008, the 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars have much room to improve on last year’s campaign. There have been some losses, of key players, as well as additions of players that are sure to make an impact. The 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Season Preview would appear to be bright provided they can keep players healthy. Jack Del Rio returns to the helm, once again, in his seventh season as Jaguars head coach. Among additions to his coaching staff includes Mel Tucker- defensive coordinator, Russ Purnell- special teams coordinator, Johnny Cox- quality control/offense coach, Cory Undlin- defensive assistant coach, and Luke Richesson as well as Jason George, join the staff as strength and conditioning coach, and assistant coach, respectively.
2009 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS OFFENSE:
The team made most of their upgrades in the off season to the offense. They ditched a few troublesome, underachieving wide receivers and brought in Torry Holt to be the number 1 receiver on the club. They signed offensive tackle Tra Thomas and drafted tackle Eugene Monroe in the first round. The presence of the additional beef on the front line, as well as a consistent and capable deep threat should help David Garrard bounce book in 2009. Maurice Jones-Drew is now the fulltime number 1 back as Fred Taylor is no longer with the club. If he can continue to produce in the running and passing game with a full workload, the Jaguars could have a high power offensive attack.
2009 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS DEFENSE:
The team lost veteran leader Mike Peterson in the off season, along with defensive end Paul Spicer and defensive tackle Tony McDaniel. However, the defensive line can still be an intimidating force with John Henderson, Reggie Hayward and company. A young group of linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties will have to step up and fill in larger roles. If Rashean Mathis, Reggie Nelson and Brian Williams all play up to potential and produce turnovers, the unit may be able to drastically improve over their poor 2008 showing. Most important of all however is that the big men on the line stay healthy and play a full, productive season.
