Indianapolis Colts 2011 Preview
There probably is not a team in the NFL whose future depends so heavily on just one player as the Indianapolis Colts. Since Peyton Manning came into the league in 1998, the Colts have won 10 or more games in 11 of his 13 seasons. He has led this team to three AFC Championship Games, two Super Bowls, and a world title in 2006. Given everything Manning has accomplished in a first-ballot Hall of Fame career, it is easy to see why the betting public is a bit skitterish on this team’s prospects this season, with his current health in question.
The star quarterback has yet to take a snap this preseason while recovering from offseason neck surgery, and is beginning to question if he will be ready to go on opening day in a crucial AFC South showdown against Houston. The talent level at the skill positions remains high with wide receiver Reggie Wayne, tight end Dallas Clark and running back Joseph Addai, but without Manning running the show this team would struggle to beat just about anybody.
The Colts defense finished the 2010 season ranked 20th overall. It was 13th against the pass, 25th against the run, and 23rd in points allowed. To try and address some of the needs on this side of the ball, Indianapolis drafted defensive lineman Drake Nevis in the third round and defensive back Chris Rucker in the sixth round, but could do little more with a total of just five picks. It then turned to free agency to try and plug some holes by signing defensive linemen Jamaal Anderson, Tommie Harris, and Tyler Brayton along with linebacker Ernie Sims. This combination of youth and veteran leadership should help to improve this unit across the board.
If Manning comes out of the gate healthy and ready to go, the Colts bang out another 10-win season and secure their annual spot in the postseason. However, if it takes a few weeks for the rust to wear off and Indy gets off to a slow start with the Texans, Steelers, Buccaneers, and Chiefs on the slate in the first five weeks, they could be in for their first losing season since 2001.
