Houston Texans 2010 NFL Record:6-10 Home: 4-4 Away: 2-6
Houston finished third in the AFC South last year with a 6-10 record. The Texans were 4-4 at home and 2-6 on the road. They went 3-3 in the division and 5-7 in the conference.
They failed to qualify for the postseason.
Houston Texans 2011 Preview
This offseason Houston made a conscience effort to address some pressing needs on defense, which begs the question, is this the year it finally all comes together for a team that has been poised for a breakout season for the past few years? Gary Kubiak enters his sixth season as head coach with probably his most talented team in his tenure with Houston, so it is easy to see why many people have adopted a ‘now or never’ mentality with the Texans in 2011. They teased us with a 9-7 record in 2009, but a slide to just six wins in 2010 could have Kubiak on the early hot seat if Houston gets off to a slow start.
You cannot blame the Texans’ offense for the lack of consistency with this team. Their roster reads like an All-Pro lineup with Matt Schaub at quarterback, Andre Johnson as the No.1 receiver, and Arian Foster carry the ball out of the backfield. All three were near or at the top of their respective category last season and expect to be right back up there in 2011. One glitch in the running game could be the loss of fullback Vonte Leach, who signed with Baltimore as a free agent. He played a significant role in Foster’s breakout season in which he led the NFL with 1,616 rushing yards.
The first step to trying and turn the defense around was the hiring of Wade Philip as the new coordinator. The Texans then turned to the draft to add defensive linemen J.J. Watt in the first round and Brooks Reed in the second. They used their next three picks on defensive backs including Brandon Harris with an additional selection in the second round. Houston was also active in free agency in an effort to fill some holes, including the signing of linebacker Tim Dobbins, who was previously with San Diego.
The pieces are in place on both sides of the ball for the Texans to finally rise up and seize the division from Indianapolis. They will get their first shot at the Colts on opening day in a game that could set the tone for the entire season.
