They failed to qualify for the postseason.
Houston Texans Outlook for 2010
In 2009 Houston won their final four regular season games to finish over .500 for the first time in franchise history. With one of the highest powered offenses in the league and a solid defense, they are hoping to build off of last year’s late season success to finally make the postseason in 2010. If they can find a way to improve on a 1-5 record in the division, they should be on their way.
So far this offseason the Texans are dealing with a few distractions that could potentially derail this effort. First, Defensive Rookie of the Year, LB Brian Cushing is dealing with the fallout from a positive drug test for a NFL banned substance. He will have to serve a four game suspension to start the 2010 season, adding more pressure to a unit that was ranked 17th in total points allowed.
Next, All-Pro wide receiver Andre Johnson is not happy with his current contract and is staying away from the team’s voluntary workouts and no one is sure when he will return. Johnson, heading into the third year of an eight year deal worth $60 million, had 101 receptions for 1569 yards last season and was the primary reason that QB Matt Schaub led the league in passing with 4770 yards.
On a bright note, the Texans added some skill players in the draft by taking CB Kareem Jackson from Alabama in the first round and RB Ben Tate from Auburn in the second. These two should be able to make an immediate impact to help this team in taking the next step. They also signed free agent T Wade Smith, who had been with Kansas City to help keep Schaub upright and safe.
There is an abundance of talent on this team, but their lack of discipline and consistency has killed them in the past. It will be up to head coach Gary Kubiak to rein this team in, keeping them focused on the task at hand. If he can successfully do this, the sky is the limit for the Texans in 2010.
2010 Houston Texans Prediction: 10-6, 2nd in the AFC South with a Wildcard berth.
