New York Giants
The New York Giants really need a victory this week as it would definitely not be good to lose their first two divisional games, even if they are both on the road. Win and they can even up their record in division as well as take an early lead over the Eagles, the team most likely to challenge them (no faith in Washington here). This is going to be a hard one to call until we know for sure about the status of Michael Vick but lets give it a shot anyways.
All criticism about faking injuries aside the Giants played a pretty good game on Monday night. It took them a little while to get going but once they did but once they did Eli Manning looked pretty good. The real question this week is who is he going to throw the ball to. The Giants have three receivers on their injury report including Mario Manningham who is a game time decision with a concussion. Their pass catching TE Travis Beckum is also questionable so they may have to rely on the running game more this week.
The Giants have lost six straight to the Eagles, most famously last December in a total meltdown that kept them from making the playoffs. This adds even more urgency to this early season tilt as the Giants need to break through especially if Vick doesn’t play. The Giants ATS record in those six losses: 0-6 including three games where they were the favourite (all at NY though).
Philadelphia Eagles
It is looking more and more like Vick is going to play this week which is good for fans but not the Giants, who have been having a hard enough time beating the Eagles as it is. Assuming he is in the lineup and unaffected by injury than Philadelphia looks pretty good to continue their current run of success against New York. Even without him they still look pretty good.
Vick is the key of course but so is the defense. I mentioned up top about the need of the Giants to run the ball well, well against the third worst running D in the league they just might be able to. Atlanta punished the Eagles on the ground and St. Louis had success too. The defensive backs are solid across the board so teams are going to pick on the line and linebackers in the run game as along as they can stay in the game doing so. Again that is why Vick is so key he gives them leads that force the other team to alter their gameplans.
With Vick in the game Philly’s chances of winning go way up but I am not sure about the number for this one. It is the biggest line between these teams over the last 10 games and you just know the Giants are going to go at that weak running defense. Plus, whether Vick is in their or not the Giants really harass QBs. He might not be in there for long if they can get to him and backup Mike Kafka might not be able to handle the pressure.
The odds makers have the New York Giants as a -9 point favorite with an over/under of 45.5.
