Detroit Lions 2010 NFL Record: 6-10 Home: 4-4 Away: 2-6

Detroit finished third in the NFC North last year with a 6-10 record. The Lions were 4-4 at home and 2-6 on the road. They went 2-4 in the division and 5-7 in the conference.

They failed to qualify for postseason play.

Detroit Lions 2011 Preview

After several years of stockpiling talent through repeatedly low draft picks, the big question for Detroit is will 2011 be the season it all starts to pay some dividends in the form of a winning season? The Lions showed flashes of having a breakout season last year, but a season-ending shoulder injury to quarterback Matthew Stafford snuffed out any chance of completely turning things around in 2010.

Stafford is reportedly healthy and ready to go, but you have to wonder how long that will last for the talented, but injury-prone signal caller. In his two seasons in the NFL, he started 10 games as a rookie and three games in 2010. If he can stay healthy for a full 16 games, this team has some playmakers in WR Calvin Johnson, TE Brandon Pettigrew, and RB Jahvid Best that he can utilize to put some points on the board. The offense was ranked 15th in scoring with a grocery list of QB’s in Stafford’s place, so with the former No.1 overall pick behind center, the Lions should be able to make some noise on this side of the ball.

Speaking of making noise, with the addition of first-round DT Nick Fairly to go along with last season’s defensive rookie of the year, Ndamukong Suh, Detroit has quickly built one of the more formidable defensive fronts in the league. The Lions were ranked 24th against the run last year, but with the addition of Fairly, this number should drop down dramatically. They also added DB Eric Wright from Cleveland and MLB Stephen Tulloch, from Tennessee to further improve a defense that was ranked 21st overall in 2010.

It is doubtful that Detroit has done enough to close the gap with Green Bay in the division, but it has enough pieces in place to finally turn the corner and make a legitimate run at a wildcard spot in the playoffs. At the very least, the Lions will eclipse their six-win total from last year, making them a solid play to go ‘over’ their projected win total of 7.5 games.

Detroit Lions 2011 Season Prediction
