Dallas’s 1-6 start in 2010 left little hope it could defend its NFC East title, so team owner Jerry Jones turned the reins over to Jason Garrett, who led the team to an encouraging 6-10 finish. The bar has once again been raised for this team to return to the top of the division this season.
A big reason for such optimism is the return of quarterback Tony Romo, who missed the final 10 games last year with a broken collar bone. The Cowboys will also have wide receiver Dez Bryant back in the lineup, after breaking his ankle in early November. Miles Austin and Jason Witten remain the primary targets in the passing game and Felix Jones and Tashard Choice along with rookie DeMarco Murray will provide the run support. With that kind of talent at the skill positions, there is little doubt that this team will be able to put some points on the board.
When Rex Ryan took over as New York’s head coach two year ago, his first priority was to establish a solid running game and a shutdown defense. After two straight trips to the AFC Championship game under this plan, the Jets will need better production from third-year quarterback Mark Sanchez in order to get to the Super Bowl. He has shown the ability to manage the game, but has yet to prove he can lead this team to a championship. The re-signing of Santonio Holmes and the addition of Plaxico Burress should help his cause.
The Cowboys are 5-0 against the spread in their last five games as an underdog and the total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last six games on the road.
New York is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 games as a favorite of 3.5 points or more. The total has gone ‘over’ in 18 of its last 24 games overall.
Romo may need some time to regain his rhythm, but bet on Dallas to keep things close enough to cover the four points in a game that bucks the recent trends and stays ‘under’ the total.
The odds makers have the New York Jets as a -4 point favorite with an over/under of 40.5.
