Cleveland Browns Outlook for 2010
The biggest change for Cleveland this offseason is having Mike Holmgren behind the scenes as President of the team. Everyone remembers how Bill Parcells came to Miami in the same capacity was able to help turn the Dolphins from a 1-15 team in 2007 to an 11-4 AFC East division winner in 2008. The same miracle scenario is being drawn up by Browns’ fans as we speak, but before you get too carried away you need to examine the current talent level of this team.
Last year on offense they were ranked 32nd overall and 32nd in passing offense. So their first move was to jettison both their previous two starting quarterbacks (Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn) and bring in Jake Delhomme as their replacement. Delhomme has had a few good years in this league but that was when he was surrounded by quite a bit of talent. He could easily struggle just as bad as the other two given the offense’s present state. They did take a chance in drafting Texas QB Colt McCoy, but he is a long term solution at best.
From the looks of this year’s draft, Holmgren decided to focus his efforts on improving a defensive unit that was almost as bad. They finished last year ranked 31st overall and 29th against the pass. With the seventh overall pick they took a playmaker in CB Joe Haden. Haden is the type of player that can come in and make a major impact from day one. They added FS T.J Ward in the second round and SS Larry Asante in the fifth round which should help their porous secondary improve in 2010.
Cleveland did win their final four games in 2009 allowing head coach Eric Mangini to keep his job for at least another year. This team is not ready to compete for the division, but they will take a few more steps in that direction in 2010.
2010 Cleveland Browns Prediction: 6-10, fourth place in the AFC North.
