Chicago finished first in the NFC North last year with an 11-5 record. The Bears were 5-3 at home and 6-2 on the road. They went 5-1 in the division and 8-4 in the conference.
They beat Seattle 35-24 in the Divisional Round, but lost to Green Bay 21-14 in the NFC Championship Game.
Chicago Bears 2011 Preview
The Chicago Bears had a successful season in terms of wins last year, but you sometimes had the feeling they were getting it done with smoke and mirrors as they did not always look like a team that won 11 regular season games and tied for the second-best record in the NFC.
This was especially true on the offensive side of the ball, as the Bears finished the 2010 regular season ranked 30th overall with an average of 289.4 total yards a game and 21st in scoring with just 20.9 points a game. Jay Cutler had one of his better seasons in his five-year career in terms of his quarterback rating, but he only completed 60.4 percent of his passes and threw 16 interceptions verse 23 touchdowns. One major area of concern was the 52 sacks he absorbed in 2010. Chicago was active in both the draft and free agency in an effort to address some of these issues. It drafted OL Gabe Carmi with the 29th overall pick to help add some protection and picked-up WR’s Roy Williams and Sam Hurd along with RB Marion Barber, who had all been recently released by Dallas, to add some depth at the skill positions.
There was no question that the Bears’ defense was one of the best in the NFL last year. It was ranked ninth overall, second against the pass, and fourth in points allowed. None the less, Head Coach Lovie Smith used three of his other four draft picks to add depth on this side of the ball. They also signed Houston free-agent NT Amobi Okeye to a one-year deal.
The 2011 season is shaping up as a repeat of 2007, when Chicago was coming off a 13-3 regular season and a playoff run that including a trip to the Super Bowl, only to fall flat at 7-9. The Bears have some decent talent scattered across the roster, but remain poised for a step backwards in light of a more competitive division and a tougher schedule overall.
