Chicago Bears Outlook for 2010
In an effort to bring in a strong arm quarterback to allow them to finally develop a solid passing attack, Chicago traded for Jay Cutler before the start of the 2009 season. While most would agree that last season did not quite work out as planned, Cutler still has the physical ability to be that guy. The big question this year is does he have the mental ability to put the frustration of last year behind him and play the way he is capable of?
Cutler did throw for close to 4,000 yards and 27 TD’s in 2009, completing over 60% of his passes, but he also led the league in interceptions with 26. If he can slightly improve on the positive aspects of his game and cut down the mental mistakes, he can then become the quarterback that the Bears had hoped for. Chicago has a capable core of receivers and a decent running back in Matt Forte, but they need Cutler elevate his game to get the most out of everyone around him. The addition of Mike Martz as the new offensive coordinator should be able to help this process along.
The Bears made the biggest splash in the free agent market by signing All Pro DE Julius Peppers this offseason. If he can return to the form that made him such a dominant force in Carolina, their defense could once again become the heart and soul of this team. They also used their first three picks in the draft to add some depth to a unit that finished ranked 17th overall in 2009.
Chicago has certainly made some bold moves over the last two years by bringing in high profile players like Cutler and Peppers. It still remains to be seen whether or not this strategy and major financial investment will actually pay off.
2010 Chicago Bears Prediction: 8-8, third place in the NFC North.
