San Diego took a surprise loss to Cincinnati last week, 34-20, which ended their playoff drive.
It was a cold and windy day, and though Phillip Rivers completed 27 passes, he couldn’t find the receivers in the end zone throwing only one touchdown while getting picked once. He shouldn’t feel bad as he kept the Chargers in the hunt until the end, anything he does in the final game of the season only builds on an impressive campaign, which saw 30 touchdowns and over 4,000 yards.
That’s little consolation to the Chargers who will miss the playoffs for the first time in four years.
Carson Palmer played the spoiler with 269 yards and four touchdowns on only 16 completions. If the Bengals could have managed that efficiency throughout the year, they would be sitting on a record better than 4-11.
Meanwhile, Denver won its fourth game against the Texans last week, a team who seems to have given up as the season winds down. The Broncos were trailing 17-0 at the half, but kept fighting and mounted a 24-6 second half rally to win, 24-23. It wasn’t pretty, but a win nonetheless.
Tim Tebow only managed one touchdown on 308 yards, but the defense managed to keep Arian Foster in check. Foster managed to play a whole game without a mysterious injury, and Matt Schaub saw another strong performance go to waste, tossing 310 yards on 23 completions.
The Broncos don’t do a lot well, ranking 25th in opponent passing, and 31st in opponent rushing, but Tebow has looked capable in Kyle Orton’s absence. While they would love to put one more nail in San Diego’s coffin, the Chargers should be able to rally the troops enough to end on a high note by beating lowly Denver.
The odds makers have the San Diego Chargers as a -3.5 point favorite with an over/under of 47.
