Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals got the victory last week even if the defense got unexpectedly shredded by Carolina rookie QB Cam Newton. Still a win is a win, even if you have to come from behind in the 4th quarter against a team many think might be the worst in the league this season. I think that is why the Cards are underdogs this weekend in a game I might have made a pick’em if I were setting the lines.
While the defense wasn’t great, the Cardinals should be happy with their offensive output from last week. New QB Kevin Kolb performed well throwing for more than 300 yards. He threw no interceptions but fumbled twice which needs to be cleaned up. Arizona was also able to run the ball – Beanie Wells might finally be turning into a productive player. He ripped off 90 yards at 5 yards per carry. Arizona is always going to be throw first but he helps establish balance and will help them close out games.
Arizona is in a great spot to take control of a weak NFC West if they can win on Sunday. Last week’s performance showed the offense can be productive and that was without Larry Fitzgerald having a big game. These team’s used to be in the same division and face each other regularly. The Cardinals haven’t beat Washington since 2000 (7 straight losses) – for whatever that is worth.
Washington Redskins
Whether this is the return of the Washington Redskins, or not, remains to be seen but it was a big win for Washington last week. They defeated the rival New York Giants, shutting them out in the second half of the game. Now they have another home contest as they look to potentially take early command of the NFC East. In such a short season it is amazing how just one victory can affect things.
The Redskins won going away by playing a pretty clean game. QB Rex Grossman didn’t throw any pics (he did fumble) and the Skins only had three penalties. Grossman threw for over 300 yards, spreading the ball to a plethora of receivers. The running game was below average but they stuck with it enabling them to have a solid Time of Possession advantage. Perhaps running back Tim Hightower will be inspired to be better against his old mates.
As long as Grossman plays well the Redskins have a chance. Even though I don’t like the makeup of this team I do give some benefit of the the doubt to coach Shanahan, who has been able to take players and elevate their production in the past. At more than a field goalI feel the value is more on the Arizona side but I have a feeling that is where the majority of the money will come it. At kickoff you might get Washington at -2.5 and that is not a bad bet if you like them (I don’t – see below…just saying).
