Atlanta Falcons 2010 NFL Record: 10-3 Home: 7-1 Away: 6-2
Atlanta finished first in the NFC South last year with a 13-3 record. The Falcons were 7-1 at home and 6-2 on the road. They went 5-1 in the division and 10-2 in the conference. They lost to Green Bay 48-21 in the Divisional Round of the playoffs after earning a bye for the Wildcard Round.
Atlanta Falcons 2011 Preview
It was Atlanta’s turn to win the NFC South last season as a different team has won this division every year since the NFL formed eight divisions after the 2001 season. Despite having the best record in the NFC and home field advantage throughout the playoffs, the Falcons had no answer for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense in an early exit from the postseason. With most of the key players from last year’s team still on the roster, the key question heading into this season is are the Falcons a legitimate NFC power, or just a one-hit wonder like all the other teams in the South seem to be?
Offensively, Atlanta should remain one of the most balanced teams in the league. Behind QB Matt Ryan and WR Roddy White, it had the 15th ranked passing game in the league. With Michael Turner and Jason Snell running the ball, the rushing offense was ranked 12th. This all added up to making the Falcons the fifth highest-scoring team in the NFL with an average of 25.9 points a game. In an effort to make this offense even more potent, the Falcons traded up in the draft to land WR Julio Jones from Alabama with the sixth overall pick. They also bolstered the running back corps with the addition of Jacquizz Rodgers from Oregon State in the fifth round.
Atlanta’s defense was ranked 16th in total yards allowed and 22nd against the pass, but remained tough to score on with the fifth-ranked unit in points allowed (18.0). Its ‘bend but don’t break’ style of defense only recorded 31 sacks on the year but finished fourth in interceptions with 22. Even though they traded away a number of picks to get Jones, the Falcons’ defense as a hole should be aided by third-round pick LB Akeem Dent, who will compete for the starting spot in the middle once training camp gets underway.
It appears that it will once again come down to a battle between Atlanta and New Orleans in the South with a Week 10 clash against the Saints at the Georgia Dome and a Dec. 26 showdown in the Superdome being the two key dates on the schedule. Unfortunately for Falcons fans, the turn-style at the top of this division continues to turn for yet another season.
