San Francisco 49ers at Cincinnati Bengals

The 49ers came in to the 2011 regular season putting the brunt of responsibility on the shoulders of their defense when they chose to run with quarterback Alex Smith for at least one more year. Now, after Smith has already lost them a game, they head to Cincinnati for their first road game against a young and energetic Bengals team.

Rookie quarterback Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers isn’t the only rookie who has impressed during his first two games of the season; Andy Dalton, who was picked up more than 32 picks after Newton, has shown poise in the pocket, and the ability to be a leader for the Bengals.

Dalton has passed for 413 yards and three touchdowns in his first two NFL games, and has had the help of fellow rookie A.J. Green. Green has been explosive, and has been an impact player for Dalton and the Bengals.

Now the rookie tandem will finally get to have a showing in front of their home crowd when they face the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday.

The 49ers blew a chance to start the season 2-0 last week when Smith threw an interception in overtime to give the Dallas Cowboys a chance to win the game, and they did.

He has been the deciding factor for the past five years now for the 49ers, and if they ever want to be considered a true play-caliber team, they are going to have to find his replacement. The team’s defense was expected to carry the offense to some wins, but that seems like a feat that little defenses would be able to achieve.

The only difference this week for the 49ers will be wideout Michael Crabtree who is making his 2011 debut. The return of Crabtree, who Smith seemed to build some chemistry with last year, could propel this team to victory, but they would have to be even more dominating on defense.

The only problem with that is the team’s other wide receiver, Braylon Edwards, will most likely miss the game, and that could make the offense even more one-dimensional in this game.

Running back Frank Gore will need to show up if the 49ers want to get back above .500.

The odds makers have the Cincinnati Bengals as a -1.5 point favorite with an over/under of 40.5.

Matt’s Prediction: Bengals 14, 49ers 10—The Bengals will come out swinging in this matchup, wanting to show the home crowd that they are for real, and A.J. Green will allow them to do that and be successful. The 49ers, on the other hand, expect to loose a step with the loss of Edwards.
