2009 Record: 10-3 Big 10 Record: 5-3 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 10 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Bret Blelema (Wisconsin and overall: 38-14, 4 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Paul Chryst Defensive Coordinators: Dave Deeren

2010 Wisconsin Players to Watch: QB SCott Tolllen, RB John Clay, WR Nick Toon, TE Lance Kendrlcks, LTGabe Carlml, LG John Moffitt, LB Chris Borland, SS Jay Valai

2010 Wisconsin Strengths:
The offense averaged 32 points and 417 yards last year and might be even more productive. especially if Clay reaches lofty expectations, which could Include the Helsman short list. Tolzien and Toan must continue thelr growth as ready-for-primetime players. The O-line must live up to its marquee billing.

2010 Wisconsin Weaknesses:
UW loses TE Garrett Graham, whose presence created favorable matchups for the other TE, Lance Kendricks. The kicking game can’t afford to disappoint, and the return game can’t be anegative like It has been. Clay and LB Mike Taylor, coming off injuries, must stay healthy.

2010 Wisconsin Offense:

A balanced, ball-control attack that led the Big Ten in scoring, rushing, total offense and time of possession returns virtually intact. The most notable loss is tight end Garrett Graham. Lance Kendricks has big potential at that position – he had seven catches for 128 yards against Miami in the bowl game – but who will complement Kendricks? The Badgers are blessed with experience in their receiver rotation: Nick Toon, David Gilreath, Isaac Anderson and Kyle Jefferson have combined for 52 starts and 215 catches. Toon has the hands and the DNA to be firstteam All-Big Ten – just like his father, Al Toon, who still ranks fourth in careers receptions and yardage at Wisconsin. In his first season as a starter, quarterback Scott Tolzien consistently found his targets, leading the Big Ten in passing efficiency. Jon Budmayr has taken over as his understudy until Curt Phillips can rejoin the competition. Phillips had knee surgery in the spring. The play-action game revolves around tailback John Clay, the MVP of the Champs Sports Bowl and the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2009. Clay, who had offseason surgery on both ankles, is backed by Montee Ball and Zach Brown. As usual, it all starts up front. Left tackle Gabe Carimi and left guard John Moffitt were All-Big Ten a year ago. Seven returning players have started, including center Peter Konz (recovering from blood clots in his lung in the spring), right guard Kevin Zeitler and right tackle Josh Oglesby.

2010 Wisconsin Defense:

Defensive end Louis Nzegwu and free safety Aaron Henry have tough acts to follow in O’Brien Schofield (24.5 tackles for loss) and Chris Maragos (four interceptions), respectively. Both were play· makers and team leaders. The Badgers must also replace their leading tackler (Jaevery McFadden) and starting tackles from a unit that held each of their last 10 opponents to less than 100 yards rushing. But they can rebuild around end J.J. Watt, an imposing stopper who will get help on the opposite end from Nzegwu and David Gilbert. Middle linebacker Culmer St. Jean will be flanked by Mike Taylor and Chris Borland, the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year. Taylor (ACL) and Borland (shoulder surgery) are both coming off injuries. Strong safety Jay Valai is the big bopper in the secondary and was a big part of the team’s tough run defense a season ago.

2010 Wisconsin Special Teams:

The Badgers have a formidable one-two punch in placekicker Philip Welch (17 of 24 field goal attempts) and punter Brad Nortman (42.0 yards per punt). But they need to improve their return game.

2010 Wisconsin Predictions:

The Badgers must sustain momentum generated by beating ranked opponent Miami in the Champ Sports Bowl. Can they do it again? Can they beat Ohio State at home? Or Iowa on the road? If they can split, and win the games they’re expected to win, they can put themselves in the Big Ten championship discussion.
