2009 Record: 1-11 PAC 10 Record: 0-9 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 6 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Paul Wulff (At Washington State: 3-22, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Todd Sturdy Defensive Coordinators: Chris Ball, Jody Sears

2010 Washington State Players to Watch: DE Travis Long, OL BJ. Guerra, WR Jared Karstetter, DE Kevin Kooyman

2010 Washington State Strengths:
Frequent three-and-outs have given Reid Forrest. one of the Pac-10′s best punters, plenty of attempts – although his coverage team is unreliable. The most likely area for improvement Is on the offensive line.

2010 Washington State Weaknesses:
The defensive line is as thin as ever, and if key people such as Travis Long or Brandon Rankin go down, life behind them will be burdensome. On the other side, plenty of available running backs are in the mix, but none is proven. Establishing a running game with even a smidgen of potency is a must.

2010 Washington State Offense:

Washington State made its biggest spring gains along the offensive line. Coach Paul Wulff reinforced the position with junior college transfers David Gonzales and Wade Jacobson, and either or both could wind up in the starting lineup, where a big key is Andrew Roxas replacing reliable Kenny Alfred at center. They need to keep quarterbacks Jeff Tuel and Marshall Lobbestael upright more often than a year ago, when the Cougars allowed 53 sacks – far and away the most in the Pac-10. Wulff has played coy, but it’s Tuel’s job. He is more mobile and has a superior arm, and he had a 354-yard passing game against California before a knee injury shelved him after five starts. When Canadian project Johnny Forzani bailed to try his luck in the Canadian Football League, it left the Cougars without a deep receiving threat. Jared Karstetter and Gino Simone are capable enough they split 70 catches a year ago – but the Cougars are counting heavily on junior college flyer Isiah Barton. Likewise, the running back committee is not a particularly impressive lot, unless one-time Cal transfer James Montgomery can fmd his old form after compartment syndrome aborted his 2009 season.

2010 Washington State Defense:

What was more woebegone than the Cougars’ offense last year? Just the WSU defense, which ranked last nationally among 120 teams and gave up nearly 1,000 more yards rushing (2,837) than any other Pac-10 team. But junior college transfer Brandon Rankin was the buzz of the camp, and fellow tackle Bernard Wolfgramm, although he has academic issues to beat, showed a new level of sic-’em in his cameos. Better-defined roles on the ends – 2009 revelation Travis Long will be a stand-up rusher, and the steady but oft-injured Kevin Kooyman a weakside stopper – should result in somewhat-stiffer resistance. They can make life easier for the linebackers, where there has been a shuffle. Leading tackler Alex Hoffman-Ellis will move outside with converted safety Myron Beck. In the middle, Mike Ledgerwood showed playmaking ability, but he may be just a placeholder until Louis Bland returns from a knee injury. WSU lost both of its best young defensive backs, LeAndre Daniels and Daniel Simmons, to broken legs by midseason in 2009. They’re the kind of budding playmakers Wulff covets.

2010 Washington State Special Teams:

Having Chantz Staden back healthy should help the return corps, and punter Reid Forrest has been the most consistently productive Coug the past two years. But after being the hero of the 2008 Apple Cup triumph, placekicker Nico Grasu has failed to develop any consistency and will continue to fight off two freshmen.

2010 Washington State Predictions:

The Cougars have to be better. It can’t get any worse, can it? Gains look to be relative and could be undermined with an injury at any number of fragile positions. If the blowouts start piling up the way they have the past two years, then the referendum on Wulff begins.
