WAC Previews

Boise State Broncos – Current odds to win a National Championship: 8-1

2009- Overall record 14-0     Conference record 8-0        Home 7-0   Away 7-0

Boise State Broncos 2010 Outlook – Boise State went 14-0 last year and has now won a 26 straight regular season games. With the current talent on this team this team could easily add another 12 wins to its streak. The Broncos return 10 starters on offense and 10 on defense from last year’s team that outscored their opponents by an average of 26 points. QB Kellen Moore is back and looking to add his impressive stats from his freshman year. In 2009 he threw for 3,534 yards and 39 TD’s. Also back are his two favorite targets; WR’s Titus Young and Austin Pettis. A very solid defense will be led by DE Ryan Wintersywk and LB Derrell Acrey.

Nevada Wolf Pack - BSC Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 8-5     Conference record 7-1         Home 5-1   Away 3-4

Nevada Wolf Pack 2010 Outlook – QB Colin Kaepernick will be back to lead Nevada’ offensive attack. Last year he threw for over 2,000 yards and ran for another 1,100. With additional support from RB Vai Taua and WR Brandon Wimberly, the Wolf Pack should be able to put points on the board in bunches. The defense will be solid up front with DE Dontay Moch; last season’s WAC Defensive Player of the Year however there are some major concerns throughout the rest of the lineup.

Fresno State Bulldogs - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 8-5     Conference record 6-2         Home 4-1    Away 4-4

Fresno State Bulldogs 2010 Outlook – Fresno State has high expectations heading into 2010 with QB Ryan Colburn and seven other starters on offense back from last year. RB Ryan Matthews is off the NFL, but Robbie Rouse appears ready to help fill the void after rushing for 479 yards of his own last year. The Bulldogs also return eight starters on defense and will be led by first team All-WAC picks last season; LB Ben Jacobs and DE Chris Carter.

Idaho Vandels - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 8-5       Conference record 4-4        Home 5-2   Away 3-3

Idaho Vandels 2010 Outlook – Idaho will have four new starters on the offensive line, but QB Nathan Enderle returns for another season. He will be joined by RB’s Deonte’ Jackson and Princeton McCarty and WR’s Preston Davis and Maurice Shaw giving the Vandels some quality players at the skill positions. The team returns 10 starters on defense but this still remains the primary weakness of this team. Idaho is hoping that another year of experience will help to turn things around in 2010 on this side of the ball.

Hawaii Warriors - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 6-7       Conference record 3-5         Home 4-3     Away 2-4

Hawaii Warriors 2010 Outlook – Hawaii won four of their last five games to finish 2009 on a high note. Looking to carry that momentum into 2010 the Rainbows are counting on QB Bryant Moniz to lead the way. If he cannot get the job done then Shane Austin will most likely get the call. Whichever single caller is behind center, their primary target will be WR Greg Salas. Salas led the team 1,590 receiving yards last year and scored eight TD’s. The defense has a solid secondary, but there are major question marks with the front four.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 4-8      Conference record 3-5         Home 4-1     Away 0-7

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 2010 Outlook – Head coach Derek Dooley left to take the top spot at Tennessee so Sonny Dykes takes over the top spot for Louisiana Tech. He will start off in good shape with nine starters returning on offense and seven on defense. QB Ross Jenkins will be back, but with an inexperienced group of receivers look for the Bulldogs to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible with RB’s Tyrone Duplessis and Phillip Livas. LB Adrian Cole leads an experienced defense that returns seven starters from last year’s team.

Utah State Aggies – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 4-8        Conference record 3-5      Home 3-2    Away 1-6

Utah State Aggies 2010 Outlook – The Utah State offense begins and ends with QB Diondre Borel. Last season he threw for 2,885 yards and gained an additional 465 yards with his feet. He will have RB Robert Turbin and WR Stanley Morrison to help carry the load, but Borel will be counted on to generate most of the offense on his own. Last season the Aggies defense gave up an average of 206 yards per game on the ground and ranked near the bottom of the conference is several major categories; something they will have to improve upon if they want to avoid another losing season.

New Mexico State Aggies – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 3-10         Conference record 1-7            Home 2-4     Away 1-6

New Mexico State Aggies 2010 Outlook – Expect RB Seth Smith, who ran for 1,016 yards last season to be a huge part of New Mexico’s offense as the quarterback situation is still up in the air. Jeff Fleming will most likely be the starting QB on opening day against San Diego State, but expect Trevor Walls to see some action as well. Another key player on offense and special teams is WR Todd Lee. Lee led the team in receptions as well as returned punts. There will be a few new faces playing linebacker for the Aggies this year, but the defensive line and secondary remains pretty much intact.

San Jose State Spartans - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 2-10             Conference record 1-7           Home 2-4     Away 0-6

San Jose State Spartans 2010 Outlook – San Jose State returns eight starters on offense, but will need to do a much better job to avoid another two win season. The Spartans only managed to average 76.7 yards rushing and 207.3 yards passing per game and really struggled to find the end zone; averaging just 13.8 points per game. In a conference known for their offensive fire power, these numbers are amongst the worst in the WAC. The defense gave up an average of 34.5 points per game which adds up to an almost 21 point margin of defeat. With teams like Utah, Wisconsin, and Alabama on their schedule it looks like another long year for San Jose State.
