2009 Record: 4-8 WAC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 8 Offense, 9 Defense, Punter

Coach: Gary Andersen (Utah State and overall: 8-15, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Dave Baldwin Defensive Coordinators: Bill Busch

2010 Utah State Players to Watch: QB Dlondre Borel, RB Robert Turbin, WR Stanley Morrison, LB Bobby Wagner, P/K Peter Caldwell

2010 Utah State Strengths:
Borel, a dual-threat quarterback, is surrounded by speedy skill players who will put tremendous stress on defenses. The defense, with nine starters back, should be better in the second season under this regime.

2010 Utah State Weaknesses:
The Aggies can’t afford to lose Borel, and they already have lost Turbin for at least a month with a torn ACL. Plus, the receiving corps lacks experience. The season begins (Oklahoma) and ends (Boise State) with two brutally tough road games.

2010 Utah State Offense:

What the Aggies run is multi-faceted – anything from the wishbone to an empty backfield. And their attack relies on speed. Senior Diondre Borel, a scary scrambler who threw just four interceptions last year, has blossomed into a complete quarterback. He needs to improve his accuracy (58.5 percent) and take fewer sacks – but they’re weaknesses he addressed in the spring with improved pocket presence and footwork. His backfreld mate, junior running back Robert Turbin, produced 142.8 all-purpose yards per game and scored 18 touchdowns last season. Turbin, however, is expected to miss at least a month with a serious knee injury – and could miss the entire season. Senior Michael Smith would be a solid replacement. Leading receiver Stanley Morrison and contributor Eric Moats return, but much of the talk about the receiving corps surrounds the newcomers. Junior college transfers Matt Austin, Dontel Watkins and Xavier Martin are expected to play key roles. Watkins ran the 40-yard dash in 4.25 seconds; Martin posted a 4.33. The line returns four starters, but the group has been shuffled to increase the physicality. The Aggies allowed 32 sacks last year. They expect to start at least one freshman this year, center Tyler Larsen.

2010 Utah State Defense:

The Aggies were overwhelmed at times last year, allowing 205.5 rushing yards, 455.1 total yards and 34 points per game – issues that need to be remedied if they want to entertain thoughfs of a bowl game. The line has also been juggled at the expense of a starter or two. The top ends in spring ball were rising junior Levi Koskan and converted safety Maxim DinkaMba. Inside, senior returning starter Sean Enesi and senior Daniel Gurrola are a pair of grinders. The three starters at linebacker return, led by All-WAC junior Bobby Wagner. The athletic Wagner led the league with 114 tackles last yearfar more than teammates Kyle’ Gallagher (53) and Junior Keiaho (36). Three senior starters return to give the Aggies enviable experience in the secondary – Chris Randle and Curtis Marsh at cornerback, and Rajric Coleman at safety. Randle and Marsh will be expected to playa considerable amount of singleman coverage.

2010 Utah State Special Teams:

Senior Peter Caldwell will likely be the punter and kicker. He handled both duties in 2007-08 but was just the punter last year, leading the WAC (42.2 yards per attempt). Running back Kerwynn Williams provided a spark as a kickoff returner last season.

2010 Utah State Predictions:

The Aggies have the look of the latest breakout team in the WAC, where Idaho, San Jose State and Louisiana Tech recently have won bowl games. In fact, the entire program has appeared to be on the upswing since coach Gary Andersen took over last year – with improved facilities and signs of growing support. On the freId, the Aggies need to play much better on defense and solve their redzone problems on both sides of the ball. And they must survive the opener at Oklahoma without any long-term damage.
