2009 Record: 9-4 PAC 10 Record: 5-4 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 6 Offense, 5 Defense, Punter

Coach: Lane Kiffin (At USC 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Lane KiffinDefensive Coordinators: Monte Kiffin

2010 USC Players to Watch: QB Matt Barkley, RB Allen Bradford, RB Dillon Baxter, FB Stanley Havili, WR Ronald Johnson, DE Armond Armstead, DT Jurrell Casey, CB Shareece Wright

2010 USC Strengths:
An athletic and deep line anchors the defense. There is plenty of experience and talent at key skill positions. USC has apotential first-round draft pick at comerback (Wright).

2010 USC Weaknesses:
There is little depth at linebacker in case one of the top four in the rotation gets Injured. The offensive line is just as shallow and cannot sustain multiple injuries. The secondary is largely inexperienced with three new starters. And then there are questions about just how good acoach Lane Kiffin will be.

2010 USC Offense:

Sophomore Matt Barkley did some good things for a true freshman quarterback, but the youth excuse is gone. He is a year older and needs to be a year better. The Trojans are relying on Barkley, who is trimmer than he was last fall, as they look to rebound from last year’s disappointing season. In reserve is one-time Arkansas starter Mitch Mustain, who had a strong spring. Barkley will enjoy one key advantage from a year ago: true freshman Dillon Baxter. He’s the most explosive tailback USC has seen since Reggie Bush. Baxter might only get nve to 10 carries a game early on, but one of those might be good for a highlight play based on his breakthrough performance in spring practice. Barkley also will need senior Ronald Johnson to stay healthy because he is the only wide receiver who can really stretch a defense. Two of the nation’s top recruits – Kyle Prater and Robert Woods could make an impact at wide receiver. Maybe the real key for Barkley will be the line. All eyes will be on true freshman super recruit Seantrel Henderson, who will be given a chance to play immediately in a unit that lacks depth.

2010 USC Defense:

Everyone expects a dominating defense because of the rock star coaching staff (Monte Kiffin, Ed Orgeron) on that side of the ball. Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey and defensive end Armond Armstead drew raves from the new staff, but nose tackle Christian Tupou likely will miss the season after suffering a knee injury in a spring scrimmage. There are a lot of other questions. Will Devon Kennard or Chris Galippo start at middle linebacker? Can anyone be trusted in the secondary other than top cornerback Shareece Wright? What happens if more than one of the top four linebackers (Kennard, Galippo, Malcolm Smith, Michael Morgan) get hurt? In the secondary, USC will start two new safeties from three candidates – T.J. McDonald, Drew McAllister, Jawanza Starling – and feature an untested cornerback in Torin Harris, T.J. Bryant or Brian Baucham.

2010 USC Special Teams:

The biggest addition is assistant coach John Baxter. His Fresno State special teams led the nation in blocked kicks (49) from 2002-09. Baxter gets to break in new kicker Joe Houston, but punter Jacob Harfman returns. Harfman probably will replace Houston on longrange field goals. There were practically open tryouts in the spring for a punt returner with Johnson, Wright, Dillon Baxter and Travon Patterson among those given an opportunity. They are also candidates to return kickoffs.

2010 USC Predictions:

USC is coming off its worst season since 2001 and is without its talisman, Pete Carroll. New coach Lane Kiffin is expected to win immediately. There are just enough marquee players to think that last year should be nothing more than a blip and that the Trojans will be on top of the Pac-10 once again. But of course USC is not eligible for a bowl game.
