2009 Record: 7-6 PAC 10 Record: 3-6 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 7 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Rick Neuheisel (At UCLA: 11-14, 2 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Norm Chow Defensive Coordinators: Chuck Bullough
2010 UCLA Players to Watch: QB Kevin Prince, WR Nelson Rosario, WR Taylor Embree, DE Datone Jones, LB Akeem Ayers, FS Rahim Moore, K Kai Forbath
2010 UCLA Strengths:
The impact transfers in the passing game – WR Josh Smith, TE Joseph Fauria – should guarantee better numbers. The pass defense, with the nation’s interception leader in Moore, will survive the loss of All-Pac-10 CB Alterraun Verner.
2010 UCLA Weaknesses:
The running game has stalled for two straight years, and introduction of the Revolver offense – avariation of Nevada’s Pistol- needs to work immediately. The loss of five starters In the defensive front seven could devastate the rush defense.
2010 UCLA Offense:
After finishing 116th and 97th in the country in rushing during the first two years of the Rick Neuheisel era, UCLA must make a giant leap in the ground game to jump into the top tier of the Pac-10. Neuheisel and venerable coordinator Norm Chow spent much of the offseason attempting to refine the new Revolver offense, a derivative of Nevada’s Pistol, after spending some time with the Wolf Pack coaching staff in Reno. With four returning linemen and a pair of dazzling incoming freshmen running backs – Malcolm Jones and Jordon James – the Bruins believe the new system will work wonders. It should benefit sophomore quarterback Kevin Prince greatly, allowing him to make decisions at the line of scrimmage and to improvise when needed. The thought is the improved running game, behind starters Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman, will boost the downfield passing game, as well. Not as much as a pair of impact transfers, though: junior wideout Josh Smith and sophomore tight end Joseph Fauria. They will join a talented corps of pass-catchers, including Taylor Embree and Nelson Rosario, Randall Carroll and tight end Cory Harkey. The new formation is designed to maximize UCLA’s biggest strength on offense – speed and get playmakers like sophomores Morrell Presley and Damien Thigpen on the field more.
2010 UCLA Defense:
A penchant for big plays and missed assignments alternately thrilled and plagued the defense in 2009, and consistency is the key this season. With only five starters returning, that’s easier said than done. The secondary should once again be the strength, despite the graduation of all-conference cornerback Alterraun Verner, with Rahim Moore returning after leading the nation in interceptions. All three cornerbacks who started opposite Verner return, including sophomores Aaron Hester and Sheldon Price. The front seven was decimated during the offseason by graduation and one huge defection – Pac-Io Defensive Player of the Year Brian Price. Price leaves much more than a 6-2, 300-pound gap, and former tight end and offensive lineman Nate Chandler will need to fill it. Datone Jones (four sacks last season) returns at end to anchor the line. The linebacking unit has talent, particularly in strongside linebacker Akeem Ayers. UCLA expects diminutive Sean Westgate to fill the other outside spot, while junior Steve Sloan and freshman Patrick Larimore waged a tight spring battle at middle linebacker.
2010 UCLA Special Teams:
Senior kicker Kai Forbath and sophomore punter Jeff Locke form one of the best kicking units in the country (only Georgia has an argument). Forbath is defending his Lou Groza Award, hoping to become the second two-time winner, while Locke was the only freshman Ray Guy Award semifinalist last year.

2010 UCLA Predictions:
UCLA rebounded from a 4-8 disaster with seven wins, including an EagleBank Bowl win over feisty Temple. Any improvement in the running game could mean a repeat of seven wins, despite a brutal schedule. Neuheisel has his sights set on eight victories, though.
