2009 Record: 5-7 C-USA Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 7 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Neil Callaway (UAB and overall: 11-25, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Kim Helton Defensive Coordinators: Eric Schumann

2010 UAB Players to Watch: TE Jeffery Anderson, WR Frantrell Forrest, OT Matt McCants, DT Elliott Henigan, LB Lamanski Ware, CB Terrell Springs, DT D.J. Reese

2010 UAB Strengths:
The offense looks to be strong again. Four out of five starting offensive linemen are back and that bodes well for apassing game that also boasts the return of all but one receiver.

2010 UAB Weaknesses:
Somebody has to replace quarterback Joe Webb, the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, which won’t be easy. But to contend, UAB must do something about the defense, which has been an ongoing problem.

2010 UAB Offense:

When you have to replace Conference USA’s Offensive Player of the Year in Joe Webb, the quarterback who accounted for 72.9 percent of your offense and 32 touchdowns, you might think the cupboard is bare. You would be wrong. The Blazers return seven starters on offense four on the line, two wide receivers and a tight end. Two running backs have starting experience and there’s a quarterback who was the team’s second leading rusher behind Webb. DAB has a chance to be explosive. Sophomore David Isabelle got valuable experience last season and brings the same type of threat to the offense as Webb. Isabelle ran for 288 yards with an eye-popping 9.0 yards per carry average on 32 carries. Coach Neil Callaway expects to be better at running back with Justin Brooks and Daniel Borne back. The running game got a boost in the spring from junior college transfer Pat Shed. Frantrell Forrest and Jeffery Anderson, the top two receivers from last season, are back, as are four of the top five. The line brings back starters Greg Bulls and Caleb Thomas at the guards, with Matt McCants and Greg Calhoun back at the tackle spots. Chris Hubbard appeared to win a starting tackle job in the spring, moving Calhoun to a guard position ahead of Bulls. Anderson returns at tight end and should contend for all-conference honors.

2010 UAB Defense:

UAB nnished last nationally in pass defense and 114th in total defense. To say the defense needs propping up is an understatement. Injuries to key players and overalliackof experience were a big part of the problem. The experience part should be ok with eight starters back. Bryant Turner and Derek Slaughter are the ends who will need to further step up the pass rush; UAB had only 19 sacks last season, including 9.5 from Turner and Slaughter. Safety Chase Daniel is back and will team with junior college transfer Jamie Bender, who was the hit of the spring, to give the Blazers an upgrade at the safety spots. Strong safety Hiram Atwater, last year’s leading tackler, missed the spring but should return in the falL

2010 UAB Special Teams:

UAB returns sophomore placekicker Josh Zahn and junior punter Trey Ragland, along with long snapper Taylor Klein. Zahn was 14 of 21 on neld goa~ attempts with his longest a 51-yarder against Southern Miss. Ragland was outstanding, averaging 42.8 yards on 55 punts, including ~o inside the 20-yard line. Frantrell Forrest will be the return specialist.

2010 UAB Predictions:

The Blazers were one game away from becoming bowl eligible after winning three of the last nve, but once again a slow start was too much to overcome. With road games at Tennessee and Mississippi State in the nrst seven games of the season, it will be essential to get off to a good start if UAB is going to go bowling.
