2009 Record: 5-7 MAC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 6 Offense, 6 Defense, Punter

Coach: Tim Beckman (Toledo and overall: 5-7, 1 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Matt Campbell Defensive Coordinators: Mike Ward, Paul Nichols

2010 Toledo Players to Watch: LB Archie Donald, WR Eric Page, C Kevin Kowalski

2010 Toledo Strengths:
There’s arunning back for every down and situation. and Toledo’s offensive line shapes up as one of the best in the conference. Page has the tools to be a90-catch standout for the next three seasons. The defense lacks depth, with only one star (Donald).

2010 Toledo Weaknesses:
So unconVincing was Quarterback Austin Dantin’s play in the spring that he wasn’t named the NO.1 entering fall practice. If the Quarterback issue persists, Toledo might fall atier below the bowl contenders. S Barry Church and QS Aaron Opelt were four-year starters and dominant on-field leaders.

2010 Toledo Offense:

In some ways, the Rockets are starting over again on offense. Four-year starting quarterback Aaron Opelt missed three games and big chunks of three others, but he left Toledo with 6,804 passing yards and 46 touchdown passes. The Rockets auditioned four quarterbacks in spring practice and no one emerged as the starter. Sophomore Austin Dantin, who passed for 962 yards in relief of Opelt last season, didn’t have the kind of spring the coaching staff expected, so the job remains vacant – a common theme at UT. Coaches also chose not to name a NO.1 running back in the spring. Junior Morgan Williams has more than 1,500 yards rushing in the past two seasons, but junior Adonis Thomas, sophomore Jake Walker and redshirt freshman Darius Reeves, who was injured in 2009, stayed within striking distance throughout April. Expect all four to play in varying roles. Wide receiver Eric Page is the Rockets’ most talented offensive player. In 2009, he had an NCAAfreshman- high 82 catches for 1,159 yards, and he led the team in punt and kickoff return yards. He’s not a blazer, but has big-playability because of his instincts. There is no true pecking order behind Page, but true freshman James Green was at Toledo for spring drills and has a chance to shine. All-MAC center Kevin Kowalski, converted last season from guard, is one of four returning starters on the line.

2010 Toledo Defense:

Subtracting Opelt from the nation’s No. 13 offense stings, but there might be more permanent scarring on defense, which loses all-everything safety Barry Church. He’s one of five defensive starters who have to be replaced. Coach Tim Beckman added three junior college transfers and a major-college import, safety Diaun- . tae Morrow from Iowa, to fIll holes in the secondary. Cornerback Desmond Marrow missed the ’09 season with a knee injury, but Beckman said he had a better winter than any player on the roster. Linebacker Archie Donald, a third-team AllMAC pick last year, is the most polished player in a young front seven that features competition at most positions. Senior Terrell Willis, a converted defensive end, and Dan Molls (43 tackles in ’09) fIgure prominently at linebacker. At end, seniors Alex Johnson and Douglas Westbrook will be pushed by sophomore T.J. Fatinikun, a star in the making who had 21 tackles in limited time last season.

2010 Toledo Special Teams:

Bill Claus averaged 37.4 yards per punt last season. The Rockets won’t easily replace four-year kicker Alex Steigerwald. Senior Bret Brodbeck and Ryan Casano, a junior who missed most of last season, are competing for that job. Page averaged 25.4 yards per kickoff return as a freshman, but isn’t likely to keep both the :kickand punt-return jobs.

2010 Toledo Predictions:

The Rockets have to survive a rugged September and replace leaders on offense, defense and special teams to get to .500. The young talent is plentiful and might be good enough to make a run at the West title … next season.
