2009 Record: 6-7 Big 12 Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 15: 5 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Mike Sherman (Texas A&M and overall: 10-15, 2 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Mike Sherman Defensive Coordinators: Tim DeRuyter
2010 Texas A&M Players to Watch: LB Von Miller, QB Jerrod Johnson, WR Jeff Fuller, TB Christine Michael, RB/KR Cyrus Gray, WR/QB Ryan Tannehill, DB Trent Hunter, LB Garrick Williams
2010 Texas A&M Strengths:
An offense that ranked fifth nationally in 2009 returns an abundance of play-making position players. including Johnson. who could become the first A&M quarterback to earn first-team all-conference honors since 1991. The defense, led by Miller at outside linebacker, has dramatically improved its speed.
2010 Texas A&M Weaknesses:
The Aggles have upgraded their athleticism on defense, but there is not much depth. A couple of injuries could devastate a defense that ranked 105th nationally last year. On offense, the Aggies are counting on at least one true freshman – and possibly more – to play key roles on the offensive line.
2010 Texas A&M Offense:
Strong-armed quarterback Jerrod Johnson has already shattered numerous school records. Johnson, who throws the deep ball particularly well, could be even better this year because of the abundance of Texas A&M’s other big-time playmakers. A&M has two premier tailbacks – Christine Michael and Cyrus Gray – with breakaway speed and tremendous strength. A&M may also possess the most talented collection of wide receivers in school history, led by the imposing Jeff Fuller, who accounted for 568 receiving yards and seven touchdowns last year despite missing almost half of the season with a fractured right fibula. Uzoma Nwachukwu, Ryan Swope, Brandal Jackson, Terrence McCoy and tight end Hutson Prioleau are all talented pass catchers around Fuller, and the X-factor is backup quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who led the Aggies with 46 receptions in ‘og. The area of concern is up front, where A&M must replace three starters. But, while the offensive line will be less experienced, the Aggies appear to be more talented. At left tackle, for example, true freshman Luke Joeckel- one of the jewels of the 2010 recruiting class – won the starting role in the spring by playing extremely well against All-American outside linebacker Von Miller.
2010 Texas A&M Defense:
Von Miller led the nation last year with 17 sacks, which was one more than the 2008 Aggies had as a team. Beyond the number of plays he makes, Miller also makes the linebackers around him – guys like speedy sophomore Sean Porter on the outside and inside linebackers Garrick Williams and Michael Hodges – much better players. Depth is a concern along the defensive line. Senior Lucas Patterson is a tough, hard-working nose tackle, and juniors Tony Jerod-Eddie and Eddie Brown have shown flashes of becoming playmakers. Sophomore Spencer Nealy also has displayed promise, but A&M needs help from newcomers like junior college transfer Jonathan Mathis. The last line of defense should be much improved as the Aggies return three starters -safety Trent Hunter and cornerbacks Terrence Frederick and Dustin Harris – to the secondary. Sophomores Colton Valencia, Steven Campbell and Steven Terrell are all promising young players after earning playing time in ’09 as true freshmen. Former junior college transfer Coryell Judie and former receiver Lionel Smith could also be key contributors.
2010 Texas A&M Special Teams:
A&M finished 10th or worse last year in the Big 12 in punt return average, punting and kickoff coverage. But not all the news is bad. Placekicker Randy Bullock evolved into a steady performer, and Gray finished fourth in the league in kickoff returns. Receiver Ryan Swope is also an electrifying return specialist. But A&M needs a punter and other specialists to step forward.

2010 Texas A&M Predictions:
If the Aggies can stay healthy, they should be improved defensively and on special teams. And with so much star power on offense, A&M can light up the scoreboard. There are probably still too many questions to make a serious run at the Big 12 South title, but a return to the final national rankings does seem possible.
