2009 Record: 9-4 MAC Record: 7-1 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 9 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: AI Golden (Temple and overall: 19-30, 4 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Matt Rhule Defensive Coordinators: Mark D’Onofrio
2010 Temple Players to Watch: QB Chester Stewart, RB Bernard Pierce, WR Michael Campbell, WR Joe Jones, DL Adrian Robinson, S Jalquawn Jarrett, LB Elijah Joseph
2010 Temple Strengths:
The Owls should be able to control the ball on the ground with Pierce, who is tough to bring down. On defense, Joseph, Robinson and Jarrett expect to have big years. The trio helped Temple shut down alot of teams last season.
2010 Temple Weaknesses:
Teams will focus on stopping Pierce, especially if a passing threat falls to develop. The Owls can’t afford any injuries to their runners, and Stewart probably will need to make plays with both his arms and legs.
2010 Temple Offense:
Coach Al Golden’s ground-oriented attack starts with sophomore Bernard Pierce, one of the nation’s top young running backs. As a freshman, Pierce ran for 1,361 yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards a carry. He was a threat to score just about every time he touched the ball. He had four games with at least 185 rushing yards. Joining Pierce in the backfield will be sophomore Matt Brown, who rushed for 529 yards and five touchdowns last season. He ran for 83 yards and a score against UCLA in the EagleBank Bowl, when Pierce had to leave in the second quarter due to injury. Last year’s starting quarterback, Vaughn Charlton, switched to tight end in spring ball, saying he could have more impact at that position. Golden called the move unselfish. That left Chester Stewart as the favorite at quarterback. He completed only 26 of 65 passes for 514 yards and three scores last season, but he ran for two scores against Akron. Michael Campbell and Joe Jones will be the key targets in the passing game. Campbell, one of the Owls’ most explosive receivers, had 27 catches for 419 yards and three touchdowns in 2009. Jones led Temple with 28 receptions for 387 yards and one score. The line should be solid, led by right tackle Darius Morris, right guard Colin Madison and left guard Wayne Tribue.
2010 Temple Defense:
The defensive line is capable of making a lot of plays. Adrian Robinson, a junior defensive end, had 13 sacks last year and was selected the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Morris Blueford, the other defensive end, registered 26 tackles last season with three sacks. The linebacking corps will be led by senior Elijah Joseph (63 tackles, 6.5 for loss, two sacks) and junior Tahir Whitehead (30 tackles). Joseph, whose twin brother Elisha is a defensive tackle for the Owls, and Whitehead boast good speed and anticipation. Jaiquawn Jarrett is the Owls’ best player in the secondary. Jarrett, an All-MAC selection and a three-year starter, finished 2009 with 76 tackles (46 solo). A dependable tackler with a good nose for the ball, Jarrett had three interceptions last year.
2010 Temple Special Teams:
Delano Green led the Owls in punt returns, with 233 yards and a school-record two touchdowns in 2009. He gave Temple good field position on numerous occasions. Placekicker Brandon McManus has a strong leg and tied Pierce with most points scored in a single season (96).

2010 Temple Predictions:
Golden has turned the Owls into a physical team, and they gained a lot of national attention last season after winning nine games. It was the school’s first winning season and first bowl appearance since 1990. If Stewart can manage the Owls’ game plan from the quarterback position, Temple should challenge again for the MAC title.
