2009 Record: 12-1 MWC Record: 8-0 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 9 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Gary Patterson (TCU and overall: 85-28, 9 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Jarrett Anderson, Justin Fuente Defensive Coordinators: Dick Bumpas

2010 TCU Players to Watch: QB Andy Dalton, LB Tank Carder, C Jake Kirkpatrick, WR/KR Jeremy Kerley, RB Ed Wesley, RB Matthew Tucker, LB Tanner Brock, WR Antoine Hicks

2010 TCU Strengths:
The offense busted out of the defense’s shadow in 2009 and ranked No.7 in the nation in total yards. There are home run threats, two-deep in fact, at every skill position. The special teams are the best in the conference. It’s hard to argue with the production of the defense put together by Patterson and Bumpas.

2010 TCU Weaknesses:
The TCU defense lost two stars in DE Jerry Hughes and LB Daryl Washington, as well as apair of All-WAC first-team comerbacks. There doesn’t seem to be the same sort of star power on defense.

2010 TCU Offense:

Whichever school passing records Andy Dalton does not already own, the senior should have locked up by mid-October. The dual-threat quarterback shifted from game manager in 2008 to game changer last season. Of course, having a stable of wide receivers and running backs that can take it to the house on any given play shouldn’t hurt his cause. The offense returns nine starters, which does not include sophomore running backs Ed Wesley and Matthew Tucker, who combined to rush for more than 1,300 yards last year as two equal-part reserves in a three-tailback rotation with now-graduated Joseph Turner. At wide receiver, TCD finally started figuring out how to get Jeremy Kerley’s jaw-dropping return skills to translate on offense. And Antoine Hicks might have been the most efficient player in the nation in 2009, scoring 10 touchdowns (six receiving, four rushing) on 32 total touches (23 receptions, nine rushes). Four starters return on the line, including AllAmerican candidates Jake Kirkpatrick at center and Marcus Cannon, who shifts from right to left tackle to replace Marshall Newhouse.

2010 TCU Defense:

TCD ranked No.1 in total defense (239.7 yards per game) in 2009, and coach Gary Patterson’s 4-2-S defense has had enough consistent success to be permanently moved from gimmicky status to simply dominant. Linebackers Tanner Brock and Tank Carder have star power, while the return of starting tackles Kelly Griffin and Cory Grant should ensure running on the Frogs will again be difficult. Neither sophomore Ross Forrest at left end nor senior Wayne Daniels on the right side can replicate Jerry Hughes’ pass rush, but the Frogs’ front six defenders should still be able to get to the quarterback The five-man secondary has experience despite losing first-team All-Mountain West Conference cornerbacks Nick Sanders and Rafael Priest. TCD, which starts three safeties, has good options there. Alex Ibiloye (weakside) and Tejay Johnson (free safety) combined for 129 tackles. Sophomore Jurell Thompson (strong safety) broke spring camp atop the depth chart over senior Tyler Luttrell, who started eight games last season.

2010 TCU Special Teams:

The return game is one of the best around with Kerley, who averaged 14.4 yards per punt return and scored two touchdowns. He also averaged 26.6 yards per kick return. The kicking duties fall on the strong right foot of junior Ross Evans, a first-team All-MWC selection. Punter Anson Kelton pinned 19 punts inside the 20-yard line, but could stand to add distance to his 37.s-yard average.

2010 TCU Predictions:

With the continued evolution of the offense, and Dalton, a darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate, under center, TCD can overcome the defensive losses of stars such as Hughes and Daryl Washington. The Sept. 4 season opener against Oregon State at Cowboys Stadium could set the tone. A win, and a BCS title run could be in the works again. A loss could challenge the team’s ability to match the mental toughness it had in going 12-0 in the regular season last year.
