2009 Record: 4-8 Big East Record: 1-6 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 4 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Doug Marrone (Syracuse and overall: 4-8, 1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Doug Marrone Defensive Coordinators: Scott Shafer

2010 Syracuse Players to Watch: RB Delone Carter. QB Ryan Nassib. LB Derrell Smith, LB Doug Hogue, FS Mike Holmes, SS Max Suter, P Rob Long

2010 Syracuse Strengths:
There’s little doubt that Syracuse’s season will go as Carter and its defense go. The front seven on defense is solid and experienced, and the mindset this year is to attack. Carter can take pressure off Nassib by running well behind aveteran offensive line.

2010 Syracuse Weaknesses:
What happens if Nassib gets hurt? Or Carter? That’s the problem with being short on scholarship players. The depth Just Isn’t there to absorb akey Injury or two. The wide receivers are stili largely unproven, which won’t make Nassib’s Job easier. The secondary needs to improve, too.

2010 Syracuse Offense:

The April arrest of star running back Delone Carter on misdemeanor assault charges – he was suspended for the spring game but will be allowed to return in the fall – served as a sobering reminder of just how fragile things are for the Orange on offense. Carter, who rushed for 1,021 yards and 11 touchdowns last year, is again being counted on to carry the offensive load. With him a year ago, Syracuse still nnished 87th nationally in rushing and 99th in scoring. So his production is necessary just to keep things afloat. Carter has a chance at a big year with three offensive line starters returning, but the rest of the unit is a major question. Sophomore Ryan Nassib, who passed for 422 yards as a reserve last year, takes over at quarterback. But there’s little in the way of proven playmakers. That could change if wide receiver Aaron Weaver, a senior transfer from Hofstra, can come close to his 797-yard season of a year ago. Beyond that, Alec Lemon, with 29 catches, is Syracuse’s top returning wideout.

2010 Syracuse Defense:

If coordinator Scott Shafer can plug a few holes – no easy task with the limited number of scholarship players Syracuse has – the unit should be able to keep the Orange in most games. Moved from the outside to middle linebacker last season, Derrell Smith made an immediate impact, leading the team with 82 tackles. One of his linebacker partners, Doug Hogue, had 9.5 sacks last year and set a single-game school record with 6.5 tackles for loss against Rutgers. The front four returns three starters, and it’s there that Syracuse will start the push for its more aggressive mindset after fInishing sixth nationally in sacks. Head coach Doug Marrone has said he wants the unit to be more of an attack defense. Free safety Mike Holmes, the team’s No.2 tackler with 77 and leader with three interceptions, and strong safety Max Sutter provide the Orange with experience in the secondary. Starting corner Da’Mon Merkerson also returns.

2010 Syracuse Special Teams:

Punter Rob Long and placekicker Ryan Lichtenstein give the Orange two solid, proven specialists. Long, who also handles kickoffs, was second in the Big East in punting average last year at 43.8 yards. Lichtenstein was 13 of 17 on field-goal attempts, going 6 of 7 from 40 to 49 yards.

2010 Syracuse Predictions:

Big East coaches are privately saying that Syracuse is much improved because the coaching is. But as second-year coach Doug Marrone knows, it still comes down to players – and he doesn’t have enough of them. He counted 52 scholarship players, including specialists, available for spring practice. Even though his defense is good enough to keep him in games, and he has a l,ooo-yard rusher to call on, a run of injuries could doom the Orange. This is an improving team that is still two years away.
