2009 Record: 7-6 C-USA Record: 5-3 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 4 Offense, 9 Defense, Punter
Coach: Larry Fedora (At Southern Miss and overall: 14-12, 2 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Todd Berry Defensive Coordinators: Todd Berry
2010 Southern Miss Players to Watch: WR DeAndre Brown, QB Austin Davis, DL Cordarro Law, LB Martez Smith, NT Anthony Gray
2010 Southern Miss Strengths:
Davis returns from an injury and will have Brown to throw to for at least another year. Brown finished with 785 yards and nine touchdowns and is one of the most talented receivers in the country. The running game should be more than adequate behind senior V.J. Floyd and impressive sophomore Desmond Johnson.
2010 Southern Miss Weaknesses:
The biggest question is on the offensive line, where only center Cameron Zipp returns. Defensively. the only concerns will be in the secondary, which must replace two starters. Redshirt freshman Deron Wilson earned one of the vacated jobs in the spring by taking over at boundary corner. Kendrick Presley rnoved into the free safety position.
2010 Southern Miss Offense:
Starting quarterback Austin Davis returns from a foot injury that sidelined him for most of last season. Backup Martevious Young also returns, giving Larry Fedora the strongest 1-2 combination at quarterback in C-USA. Davis, a junior, passed for 1,165 yards and 10 touchdowns before suffering the season-ending injury. Davis is the ideal signal caller in Fedora’s spread offense – a quarterback who makes good, quick decisions and is accurate. Young started the fmal eight games and went 4-4. He tossed 16 touchdown passes and was intercepted only three times. At running back, Fedora was encouraged after spring practice by senior V.J. Floyd and sophomore Desmond Johnson. He also liked the change-ofpace offered by special teams standout Tracey Lampley, who is 5-9, 170 pounds. The offense will always be a threat because of DeAndre Brown, who has 114 catches for 1,902 yards and 21 touchdowns in two seasons.
2010 Southern Miss Defense:
The Golden Eagles ranked an uncharacteristic 80th nationally in total defense last season and were 109th in pass defense, but there might not be a better front seven in C-USA. Each of the starters on the defensive line and at linebacker return. What should aid a potential turnaround – and what will make the defensive front even more imposing – will be the return of veteran end Roshaad Byrd. Byrd dislocated his ankle in practice midway through last season, but should be in the mix when the season starts. He started the team’s first six games and had three tackles for loss before the injury. At linebacker, Martez Smith, Korey Williams and Ronnie Thornton are effective and punishing. Williams finished third in the league in sacks (7.5), fifth in tackles for loss (11) and sixth in total tackles (121). Thornton had 10.5 tackles for loss and 114 total tackles. Cornerback c.J. Bailey, a three-year starter who has 26 career pass break-ups, is the all-conference candidate in the secondary.
2010 Southern Miss Special Teams:
Tracey Lampley averaged 14.5 yards per punt return to rank sixth in the NCAA. He was 15th in the national rankings with a 27.6-yard average on kickoff returns. Lampley scored touchdowns last season four different ways: on a punt return, a kickoff return, a pass reception and a rush. The Golden Eagles must improve the kicking game. Southern Miss missed 10 extra-point attempts, including one that cost it the East Division title. Danny Hrapmann has taken over those duties.

2010 Southern Miss Predictions:
Fedora has led the Golden Eagles to bowl games in each of his two seasons by getting his team to hnish strong. This year he could have Southern Miss in position to win the East Division. The Golden Eagles return a strong 1-2 tandem at quarterback and might field the division’s strongest defense. Despite a tough early schedule – South Carolina and Kansas – Southern Miss is a strong candidate for a 17th straight winning season and ninth consecutive bowl.
