2009 Record: 7-6 SEC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Steve Spurrier (South Carolina: 35-28, 5 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Steve Spurrier Defensive Coordinators: Ellis Johnson

2010 South Carolina Players to Watch: QB Stephen Garcia, WR Alshon Jeffery, DE Cliff Matthews, CB Stephon Gilmore, SS DeVonte Holloman, LB Rodney Paulk

2010 South Carolina Strengths:
South Carolina dealt with key injuries last year but still managed to field the league’s third-best defense behind Alabama and Florida. Matthews’ ability to get pressure will be key, as will Paulk’s return from knee surgery. The offense has significantly fewer Question marks than ayear ago at the skill positions.

2010 South Carolina Weaknesses:
The offensive line is on its third position coach in as many years. Can Shawn Elliott get consistency out of this group? There simply has to be some drop-off after losing OLB Eric Norwood, the school’s career leader in sacks and tackles for a loss.

2010 South Carolina Offense:

The flash point of the offense is junior quarterback Stephen Garcia, but the key to unlocking success is the line. The Gamecocks have hovered near the bottom of the league in sacks allowed the past couple of seasons and have be~n last in the SEC in rushing in each of the past three years. When the run game goes wrong, coach Steve Spurrier hits eject and the Gamecocks get pass-happy. In fairness, those sacks aren’t entirely the line’s fault. Garcia admits he needs to do a better job of getting rid of the ball. That was one focal point of the spring. The other was Garcia’s accuracy. Garcia threw for 2,862 yards last season, but he completed only 55 percent of his throws. That needs to improve. He’ll have help. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery burst onto the scene halfway through his freshman season, making all but fIve of his 46 catches after the fIfth game. Jeffery is a monster at 6-4, 237, even if he isn’t the fastest player on the fIeld. Freshman Ace Sanders could fIll the offense’s need for a smaller, quicker receiver. Tori Gurley, a big receiver, is learning the slot so he and Jeffery can be on the fIeld at the same time. No one is giving up on the impact ability of sophomore running back Jarvis Giles, but he might have to move aside for true freshman Marcus Lattimore.

2010 South Carolina Defense:

The Gamecocks have an SEC Defensive Player of the Year candidate in sophomore cornerback Stephon Gilmore. He’s smart enough and physical enough to make an NFL roster right now. At 6-1, 188 pounds, Gilmore has good ball instincts and hitting power. He’s a special talent in the league. His former high school teammate, DeVonte Holloman, could be ready for a similar breakout season at strong safety. Chris Culliver and Akeem Auguste, both veterans, are flip-flopping their spots, with Culliver heading to corner and Auguste moving to safety. What the defense is truly searching for, though, is a pass rush beyond just the ultra-talented Cliff Matthews. Shaq Wilson is a bit undersized, so that hurts his rush ability. End Devin Taylor is still growing into his lanky frame. Linebacker Rodney Paulk, who tore up his knee in last season’s opener, is back and healthy in the middle.

2010 South Carolina Special Teams:

Spencer Lanning, fIlling a dual role last season, made 17 of 20 field goal attempts and averaged nearly 42 yards a punt. Stephon Gilmore has given a spark to punt returns. A wild card could be former track All-American Marty Markett, a walk-on with world-class speed and decent size.
