2009 Record: 8-5 C-USA Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: June Jones (At SMU 9-16, 2 years)
Offensive Coordinators: June Jones Defensive Coordinators: Tom Mason
2010 SMU Players to Watch: QB Kyle Padron, LTKelvin Beachum Jr., WR Aldrick Robinson, WR Terrance Wilkerson, FS Chris Banjo, LB Pete Fleps
2010 SMU Strengths:
June Jones’ offense is clicking in Dallas. And when that happens. It’s tough to beat. The fact that he has aretumlng starter under center is scary for C-USA teams. Padron can get the ball to several playmakers who can take it the distance on any play.
2010 SMU Weaknesses:
This is a young team, with one senior on offense and three on defense atop the post-spring depth chart. The defense Isn’t bad. but can it survive aseason full of shootouts? The team loses it top tackle, top defensive back. top rusher and top receiver. It will be achallenge to fill those holes.
2010 SMU Offense:
Gone are the 98 receptions and 1,339 receiving yards from Emmanuel Sanders. Gone are the 1,188 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns from running back Shawnbrey McNeal. But SMU coach June Jones doesn’t do rebuilding. Not with his offense. After the Mustangs’ pass-happy scheme carried the program to a bowl victory in 2009, the 2010 version is hoping to fare even better, despite having just one senior starter on the post-spring depth chart. Sophomore quarterback Kyle Padron returns as the starter after a seven-game freshman campaign netted 1,922 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and a 67.2 completion percentage. His backup, New Mexico State transfer J.J. McDermott, was a big hit in spring practice. Zach Line gets the nod at running back. He had just 189 rushing yards in 2009, but you can’t argue with his efficiency. He rushed for seven touchdowns on just 49 carries. Despite losing Sanders, the Mustangs have star power at receiver. Aldrick Robinson, the lone starting senior on the offense, and junior Terrance Wilkerson combined for 89 receptions, 1,327 yards and nine touchdowns in 2009. Left tackle Kelvin Beachum Jr. anchors the line and has All-Conference USA potential.
2010 SMU Defense:
SMU’s defense will never be on the marquee under the offensive-minded Jones. Yet the defense rose to the occasion on more than one instance last year, holding Houston’s Case Keenum to a near season-low 233 passing yards arid holding national rushing leader Nevada to 137 yards on the ground in the Hawaii Bowl. This season, however, the Mustangs must replace their leading tackler (linebacker Chase Kennemer) and their secondary will be tested plenty without the departed Bryan McCann and Rock Dennis. Free safety Chris Banjo, who had 86 tackles in 2009, returns to help out. The front seven will be led by linebacker Pete Fleps, who had 83 tackles, including 7.5 for loss. Junior defensive end Taylor Thompson led the team in sacks last season with 5.5.
2010 SMU Special Teams:
The team’s top return men are gone, but there are plenty of horne run threats among the defensive backs and wide receivers. Kicker/punter Matt Szymanski is back after scoring 80 points in 2009 (47 extra points, 11 field goals) and averaging 41.9 yards per punt. Margus Hunt is the most notable SMU special teams performer. The 6-8, 272-pound defensive end is back after blocking seven kicks (three extra points, four field goals) – the second-highest single-season total in NCAA history.

2010 SMU Predictions:
SMU won seven more games in 2009 than in Jones’ 1-11 debut season in 2008. That was the biggest turnaround among FBS schools last year, resulting in the Mustangs’ first bowl bid and win since 1984. Winning more than eight games will be a challenge, but SMU could be Jones’ most fme-tuned team in his third season. If the team overcomes the loss of a several star playmakers on both sides of the ball, it can make some noise in C-USA.
