2009 Record: 4-8 MWC Record: 2-6 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Brady Hoke (San Diego State: 4-8, 1 year)
Offensive Coordinators: Al Borges Defensive Coordinators: Rocky Long
2010 San Diego State Players to Watch: WR Vincent Brown, WR DeMarco Sampson, QB Ryan Lindley, C Trask losefa, CB Jose Perez, P Brian Stahovlch
2010 San Diego State Strengths:
The passing game, Ryan Lindley returns as Quarterback along with three of his top five receivers – wideouts Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson, and tight end Alston Umuolo.
2010 San Diego State Weaknesses:
The running game has been problematic for the past few years and there’s no certainty the nation’s 116thranked rushing attack will improve noticeably In 2010. The Aztecs are still acclimating to Rocky Long’s 3-3-5 defense and need better man coverage to make the high-pressure scheme work.
2010 San Diego State Offense:
While only one quarterback in the Mountain West Conference threw more touchdowns last year than Ryan Lindley (23), nobody tossed more interceptions (16). That latter number is a major focus for 2010. Lindley enters his second season with coordinator Al Borges and should benefit from the receivers, likely the team’s best position group. Vincent Brown is considered an NFL talent, averaging 111.1 yards per game last season. DeMarco Sampson stepped up when Brown was out with a hand inju~ and led the team in receiving yards. Tight end Alston Umuolo is another proven option. Questions lie in the running game, both in the backheld and on the line. Center Trask Iosefa is the most experienced lineman Second-year coach Brady Hoke signed three junior college players to patch holes. Hoke, who is planning more two-back sets, also signed three running backs to create competition, hnd a playmaker and revive that position. Junior college transfer Deonte Williams could be that back, as could incumbent Walter Kazee. Freshman Ronnie Hillman has plenty of speed.
2010 San Diego State Defense:
Second-year coordinator Rocky Long in the spring converted linebacker Andrew Preston to the hybrid safety/linebacker position, called the Aztec, to lead the attacking 3-3-5 defense. If Preston and those occupying the other hybridtype positions are to make plays, they need corners Leon McFadden and Jose Perez to be more consistent in man coverage. Senior defensive back Dey Juan Hemmings is another veteran, and he should be recovered from spring ankle surgery to be a key contributor. Linebacker Miles Burris, who had 58 stops last season, is the team’s leading returning tackler. The Aztecs struggled to effectively rush the quarterback a year ago. They registered just 19 sacks, which was second worst in the conference and among the lowest nationally. Junior college transfer Perry Jackson is regarded as San Diego State’s best defensive recruit and should enhance its speed on the edge.
2010 San Diego State Special Teams:
Sophomore punter Brian Stahovich was the bright spot in the Aztecs’ otherwise unimpressive special teams play. He ranked second in punting average (43.8) in the Mountain West and could be all-conference this year, as last season’s leading punter graduated. Lane Yoshida brings experience to the placekicking position, but he ranked last in the league in field-goal percentage and was among the bottom third in PAT accuracy.

2010 San Diego State Predictions:
The Aztecs have experience and a history of talent – San Diego State usually produces the most NFL players of any team in the conference. If not for two losses in which the Aztecs surrendered double-digit leads, they could have been a postseason team in Hoke’s first at the schooL It’s possible this is a bowl team, especially given the uncertainty of the MWC’s middle class teams. SDSU still might not be strong enough up front and may need another year of seasoning to excel in the 3-3-5 defense.
