Before we look at Week 5 PAC-10 match ups, let’s look at how the conference is shaping up. First of all, the PAC-10 is an amazing 10-4 vs. other BCS conferences and has three QBs that are currently ranked in the nation’s top 25 in passing efficiency ( No. 11 Andrew Luck of Stanford, No. 14 Matt Barkley of USC and No. 25 Nick Foles of Arizona). Oregon RB LaMichael James is No. 2 in the nation with 158.83 rushing yards per game while Arizona’s Travis Cobb is No. 1 in the nation in kickoff return average (37.83 ypr) and Oregon’s Cliff Harris is No. 1 in the nation in punt return average (28.14 ypr).
Defensively, the numbers are just as good with four Pac-10 teams ranking among the top 15 in the nation in pass efficiency defense: No. 2 Oregon, No. 4 Stanford, No. 11 Arizona, and No. 15 California.
My pick for PAC-10 game of the week has to be Stanford at Oregon on ABC. The Cardinal is tied for No. 1 in the nation with a 100 percent scoring rate in the red zone, racking up 18 TDs in 26 red zone opportunities. Oregon is No. 1 in the nation with 57.75 points per game while Stanford is No. 4 with 48 ppg. This should be a fantastic display of offensive talent.

Washington State @ UCLA – 3:30 PM ET
UCLA (2-2) pulled off the upset of the week routing No. 7 Texas in Austin, 34-12 on Saturday. It wasn’t the first time the Bruins have beaten the Longhorns, it happened 13 years ago when a winless UCLA squad thumped the 11th-ranked Longhorns, 66-3.
The Bruins rolled up 264 yards on the ground against the nation’s No. 2 rushing defense, behind a solid effort from RB Johnathan Franklin who had his second consecutive 100-yard game, running for 118 yards and a touchdown.
But it wasn’t just the offense that was impressive, the defense stepped up and did its job, and leading the way was linebacker Akeem Ayers. Ayers finished with six tackles, an interception, and a sack that included a forced fumble. He should have a field day in Pasadena come Saturday.
Plagued by turnovers, including four interceptions from QB Jeff Tuel, Washington State (1-3) were handed its 12th straight loss, losing to USC, 50-16.
The Cougars are clearly the worst team in the PAC-10 ranking 101st overall in points scored and fourth worst in the nation for points against. There last win outside the state of Washington was beating UCLA on October 28 of 2006.
All the same, Washington State just dosen’t have the tools it needs to beat an improved Bruins team in its own house.

Odds: Washington State: +27 – UCLA: -27 – Over/Under: 51

Arizona State @ Oregon State – 6:30 PM ET
Oregon State (1-2) has dropped out of the Top 25 rankings after a tough 37-24 loss to No. 3 Boise State over the weekend.
The Beavers never really got things going and were outgained 469-237. Boise State’s Kellen Moore decimated OSU’s secondary nearly doubling the output of Beav’s QB Ryan Katz, who completed just 12 of 26 passes for 159 yards and a single TD.
Meanwhile, the Beavers’ offense is a pitiful 115th in the nation in third down conversion percentage (26.5 percent), and it hasn’t helped that the ground assault has been limited, as opponents have been able to hold RB Jacquizz Rodgers to minimal yardage. He was held to 46 yards on 18 carries and a 4-yard TD run in their bout with Boise.
Similarly, Arizona State (2-2) has now lost two straight including a gut wrenching 42-31 loss to No. 5 Oregon, in a game where ASU put up 597 yards of offense but turned the ball over seven times and racked up nearly 100 yards in penalties.
The ASU offense went on a rampage, but coughed up three fumbles and four interceptions from QB Steven Threet. In contrast, Oregon State is the only team in the nation that has yet to lose a turnover.
The Sun Devils have played better football in my opinion through its first three games but has lost on bad penalties and costly turnovers. They also have the better of passing game, and the will keep the Beavers’ defense guessing.
Prediction: Arizona State – Bet Now
Odds: Arizona State: +3.5 – Oregon State: -3.5 – Over/Under: 56

Washington @ #18 USC – 8:00 PM ET
Washington (1-2) will be looking for revenge for last year’s loss in Husky Stadium, but it may be a difficult task for a team that hasn’t won on the road since 2007.
QB Jake Locker wants to get back on track after the pounding the Huskies received in its first game against a ranked opponent this year, falling to No. 8 Nebraska, 56-21.
Everything came undone including QB Jake Locker who completed just 4 of 20 for 71 yards, including two interceptions. But if the Heisman hopeful is able to pull himself together, it could spell problems for a USC defense that still looks shaky five weeks into the season.
The No. 18 Trojans will hope that QB Matt Barkley and a 4-0 start will carry them to victory over a Huskies defense that is allowing just 243 yards and 14 points per game. They are especially tightfisted against the run, limiting opponents to just 86 yards rushing per game.
In contrast the Trojans defense still needs some tweaking after allowing 323 yards of offense last weekend against a pitiful Cougars offense, and is allowing 259 yards passing per game.
The game will hinge on the Trojans ability to establish its running game that amassed a season-high 285 yards in its last outing. That combined with Barkley’s passing prowess, I really don’t see the Huskies taking this one.
Prediction: USC – Bet Now
Odds: Washington : +10 – USC: -10 – Over/Under: 60.5

#9 Stanford @ #4 Oregon – 8:00 PM ET on ABC
ESPN’s “College Game Day” will be on hand, as the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal (4-0) and No. 4 Oregon Ducks (4-0) will do battle to establish itself as the early conference leader and perhaps the PAC-10 title winner as well as a dark horse contender for a national title.
The stage is set for both Oregon running back LaMichael James and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to cement their bids as leading Heisman Trophy candidates in this PAC-10 tilt.
In last year’s meeting between these two teams, Oregon was coming off a big win over the Trojans, but suffered their first conference loss of the season the following week at Stanford, 51-42.
At first glance, this year’s Ducks seem to running amuck outscoring their opponents, 231-44. They have had success both running and passing the football, thanks to an O-line that has opened holes and allowed just a single sack so far this year.
The defense, although tied for third in scoring defense (11 ppg), have struggled against the run and were rocked in last week’s game at ASU, where the Ducks gave up nearly 600 yards.
Stanford meanwhile, will bring its 12th overall defense to Eugene, limiting its opponents to just 13 points per game. The Cardinal leads the conference with 14 sacks. Oregon is tied for second with 11.
The difference in this one will culminate in Luck’s ability to put up solid numbers through the air stretching the OU secondary by mixing up a cocktail of Doug Baldwin, Chris Owusu and Ryan Whalen, all who have potential of making the big plays downfield. Oregon may have the advantage of playing at home, but it won’t be enough to derail Stanford.
Prediction: Stanford – Bet Now
Odds: Stanford: +7 – Oregon: -7 – Over/Under: 65
