2009 Record: 11-2 Big 10 Record: 7-1 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 9 Offense, 7 Defense
Coach: Jim Tressel (Ohio State: 94-21, 9 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Jim Bollman Defensive Coordinators: Jim Heacock. Luke Fickell
2010 Ohio State Players to Watch: QB Terrelle Pryor. RB Brandon Saine. WR DeVler Posey. TE Jake Stoneburner, DE Cameron Heyward, LB Ross Homan. CB Chlmdl Chekwa, FS Jermale Hines
2010 Ohio State Strengths:
The running backs go five deep not counting Pryor, who is the best runner of them all. The offense has a nice blend of power and speed with nearly everyone returning. Heyward is an All-American in the making and Homan quietly collects double figures in tackles nearly every week.
2010 Ohio State Weaknesses:
Pryor has to prove he can be consistent for an entire season. The offensive line, for all its experience, struggled during the spring. The front four and back end of the defense are untested. Aside from Heyward and DT Dexter Larimore, the Bucks will be young on the defensive line.
2010 Ohio State Offense:
Terrelle Pryor led the offense in rushing yards (779) and passing yards (2,094) as a sophomore, but that could change this season. The Buckeyes can go five deep at tailback, and Pryor has put more of an emphasis on developing as a passer. Senior Brandon Saine is finally healthy and could explode as the starting tailback. A 100- and 400-meter state champ in high school, Saine started the final nine games at tailback last season and finished second to Pryor with 739 rushing yards and four scores. Junior Dan Herron rushed for 600 yards and seven touchdowns last season and is again a backup. DeVier Posey caught 60 passes last season, nearly twice as many as Dane Sanzenbacher, the next closest receiver with 36. NO.3 receiver Duron Carter missed the Rose Bowl because of grades and was held out of spring practice, presumably for the same reason. Taurian Washington worked as the third receiver in his absence and will compete with Carter and freshman Chris Fields. The only question along the line is who starts at left tackle. Junior Mike Adams, who has never reached his potential because of injuries and ineffectiveness, gets his big chance.
2010 Ohio State Defense:
The Buckeyes return seven starters from a unit that ranked in the top five nationally in total defense, points allowed and turnover margin. They ranked seventh against the run. Cameron Heyward anchors the line as an AlIAmerica candidate at defensive end. His 6.5 sacks led the team last season, and he is expected to evolve into one of the best defensive ends in the country. Defensive tackle Dexter Larimore is in his third season as a starter. Senior linebackers Ross Homan and Brian Rolle return after leading the team in tackles last year with 108 and 95, respectively. The strongside linebacker likely will be 19-year-old junior Etienne Sabino, who previously became a star on special teams and now should start for the first time. The Buckeyes need a new pair of safeties. Jermale Hines started a handful of games and played frequently as a free safety/linebacker hybrid, but now has the job full time. Orhian Johnson was slowed by injuries last season, and was stuck behind three-year starter Kurt Coleman. Behind Johnson and Hines are a slew of unproven youngsters.
2010 Ohio State Special Teams:
Senior kicker Devin Barclay is a 27-year-old former professional soccer player. He went 7 of 10 last year on field goals, with a long of only 39 yards. Junior Ben Buchanan appeared in one game last year, averaging 42.8 yards on four punts. Taurian Washington and tailback Jordan Hall will get the first chance as the new return men.
