2009 Record: 6-6 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 6 Offense, 10 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Brian Kelly (At Notre Dame: 1st year Overall 171-57-2, 19 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Charley Molnar Defensive Coordinators: Bob Diaco

2010 Notre Dame Players to Watch: QB Dayne Crist, WR Michael Floyd, TE Kyle Rudolph, WR T.J. Jones, LB Manti Te’o, LS Brian Smith, DE Ethan Johnson

2010 Notre Dame Strengths:
Floyd and Rudolph combined for 1,159 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns last season, anchoring areceiving corps loaded with potential. They and the rest of apromising pass-catchlng crew will get aheavy workload in a strike-quick spread offense.

2010 Notre Dame Weaknesses:
Depth will be an iissue on the defensive line and at safety. Defensive linemen Ian Williams, Kapron Lewis-Moore and Ethan Johnson have NFL talent, but the players behind them are unaccomplished. Jamoris Slaughter and Harrison Smith have to grab hold of the starting safety positions with little experience backing them up.

2010 Notre Dame Offense:

Notre Dame’s offense is all about speed. The Irish need quarterback Dayne Crist, the team’s most experienced passer – having completing 10 of 20 passes for 130 yards with one touchdown last season – to be fully recovered from a torn ACL and grasp new coach Brian Kellys fastpaced spread offense. The receivers, headlined by Michael Floyd and his 44 catches for 795 yards and nine touchdowns last season, need to get used to a larger workload and the offense’s quick pace that left some gasping for air in the spring. Tight end Kyle Rudolph, who had 33 catches for 364 yards and three touchdowns in 2009, could be a huge weapon in this offense. On the line, left guard appears to be the only stable position with Chris Stewart. Chris Watt is pushing Braxston Cave and Dan Wenger at center. Zack Martin and Matt Romine are battling for time at left tackle. Taylor Dever and Trevor Robinson rotated between right tackle and guard in the spring. Armando Allen, who ran for a team-high 697 yards last season, is the starting running back, but the team needs backups Robert Hughes, Jonas Gray and Cierre Wood to produce.

2010 Notre Dame Defense:

New coordinator Bob Diaco will try to erase the memory of last season, when the Irish gave up a school-record 397.8 yards per game. The linebackers are the most experienced and talented in the new 3-4 defense that replaces last season’s 4-3 look. Sophomore Manti Te’o, the onetime super recruit who was fourth on the team in tackles (63) as a freshman, will anchor the middle. He’s coming off an impressive spring. Brian Smith, who had 71 tackles last season, returns to his natural outside spot opposite Darius Fleming. Steve Filer, Kerry Neal and David Posluszny provide quality talent as reserves. The starting three on the defensive line – nose tackle Ian Williams and ends Kapron Lewis-Moore and Ethan Johnson – combined for 117 tackles last year, including 19.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Safeties Jamoris Slaughter and Harrison Smith need to solidify the safeties. Cornerbacks Gary Gray, Darrin Walls and Robert Blanton have shown the talent to be starters, just maybe not on a consistent basis.

2010 Notre Dame Special Teams:

Kicker Nick Tausch showed potential as a freshman, making 14 of 17 field-goal attempts. Punter Ben Turk took over midway through last season and averaged 38.2 yards on 26 punts. A combination of receivers Theo Riddick, John Goodman and T.J. Jones, as well as Armando Allen, appear to be the best options at punt returner. Riddick returned 37 kickoffs for 849 yards last season.

2010 Notre Dame Predictions:

It’s an interesting transition for Notre Dame, with a new coaching staff, new systems and renewed optimism. Given all that change, combined with some personnel deficiencies, nobody needs to have hopes for a first-year miracle, but it should be fun to watch the Irish move along the learning curve under Kelly.
