2009 Record: 2-10 Sun Belt Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 9 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Todd Dodge (North Texas and overall: 5-31, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Mike Canales Defensive Coordinators: Gary DeLoach

2010 North Texas Players to Watch: WR Darius Carey, S DaWaylon Cook, RB Lance Dunbar, WR Jamaal Jackson, LB Craig Robertson, RT Esteban Santiago

2010 North Texas Strengths:
The Mean Green has plenty of playmaker St UNT’s six most productive pass-catchers return, including versatile back Lance Dunbar, who might be the Sun Belt’s best runner. The receiving group will include newcomers in transfer Tyler Stradford and former QB Riley Dodge.

2010 North Texas Weaknesses:
UNT’s three quarterbacks have acombined two career starts. so inexperience there could be an issue. That could lead to more turnover trouble. The Mean Green ranked among the nation’s worst in tumover margin (minus 14) last season.

2010 North Texas Offense:

Injuries eroded the arm of Riley Dodge, so he moved from quarterback to receiver this spring. That should put senior Nathan Tune (two career starts) in the top spot, but sophomore Derek Thompson could get a shot to run the talented offense. The Mean Green has a wealth of capable receivers for its spread offense. Jamaal Jackson, the team’s leading wideout and kick returner is back. So is Darius Carey, among others. Draylen Ross moves from the defensive line to tight end, a position that should be used more this season. Perhaps the focus of opposing defenses will be running back Lance Dunbar. He finished second in the Sun Belt in rushing last season (1,378 yards), despite starting only eight games. He’s also a threat in the receiving and kick return games. The line was a big reason why the Mean Green featured one of the Sun Belt’s top offenses a year ago. Four starters, including Esteban Santiago, return from a group that allowed the fewest sacks in the conference – one per game. It also opened holes for the Sun Belt’s second-best rushing offense.

2010 North Texas Defense:

Senior linebacker Craig Robertson is the leader of the defense. He registered a career-high 107 tackles last season, second best in the conference. Jeremy Phillips and A.J. Penson, the other returning linebackers, combined for eight starts last year. UNT also has seasoned players on the defensive line. Four players who started return, including defensive end and sack leader Brandon Akpunku, and interior lineman Shavod Atkinson. Three starters return to the defensive backfIeld. Junior cornerback Royce Hill led the team in interceptions last season. Safety DaWaylon Cook was the Mean Green’s second leading tackler. Coach Todd Dodge signed 10 junior college players this winter, each capable of contributing soon. Of those signees, eight play on defense. There could be a lot of shuffling because even though the group made a big stride from 2008, it still ranks as one of the nation’s weakest defenses.

2010 North Texas Special Teams:

Jamaal Jackson ranked among the top 20 kickoff returners in the country, averaging 27.2 yards per return. However UNT ranked near the bottom of the nation last year in punting and punt returns. Placekicking could get an upgrade with the addition of freshman Zach Olen, who was considered among the nation’s top kicking prospects.

2010 North Texas Predictions:

Todd Dodge has acknowledged that he probably needs at least six wins this year if he is to stay at UNT beyond 2010. The daunting part: He only has fIve victories in his fIrst three seasons. Luckily for Dodge, this group looks capable with all the talent and experience on offense. If the defense can generate more turnovers, and the Mean Green can eke out a close game or two – it dropped five by four points or less last season – UNT could reach Dodge’s goal. If that happens, he should be around to christen the new stadium in 2011.
