2009 Record: 3-10 WAC Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 7 Offense, 6 Defense, Punter
Coach: DeWayne Walker (New Mexico State and overall: 3-10, 1 year)
Offensive Coordinators: Mike Dunbar Defensive Coordinators: DeWayne Walker
2010 New Mexico State Players to Watch: RB Seth Smith, RB Kenny Turner, CB Davon House, WR Marcus Allen, RG Sioeli Fakalata, LB Frank Padilla
2010 New Mexico State Strengths:
There is agenuinely optimistic attitude around the NMSU program under Walker. The secondary can be the strength of what might turn into one of the WAC’s more solid defenses. The running back tandem of Smith and Turner could be potent.
2010 New Mexico State Weaknesses:
The lack of talent at quarterback is still scary for NMSU, and the Aggies’ defense can only do so much In the offense-dominated WAC. The Aggles could hover around last year’s three-win total and still be abetter team. But without on-field results, it’s increasingly difficult to change the mindset of a losing program.
2010 New Mexico State Offense:
You’d be hard-pressed to fmd a team that suffered through more quarterbacking headaches than New Mexico State in 2009. The position combined for 1,141 passing yards (ahead of only option-based Navy and Army nationally), threw just six touchdowns (only Army’s five were fewer) and had 18 interceptions (second most to Miami, Ohio, which had 265 more attempts). The good news is that new coordinator Mike Dunbar – who helped Minnesota, Cal and Northwestern improve their passing attacks – has a more proven track record than the departed Timm Rosenbach. The bad news is that no one has seized the quarterback position, and the Aggies will enter fall camp with an open competition between one of last year’s two starters, Jeff Fleming, and junior college transfer Matt Christian. They’ll be able to hand off to 1,000-yard rusher Seth Smith and junior college All-American Kenny Turner. They could give the Aggies one of the WAC’s best rushing attacks, considering a solid offensive line returns mostly intact. Second-year head coach DeWayne Walker says right guard Sioeli Fakalata can play at the next leveL Several receivers, most notably Marcus Allen, show big-play potential in practice, but they simply haven’t produced in games. Whether that was a byproduct of poor quarterback play remains to be seen.
2010 New Mexico State Defense:
NMSU’s defense was far from great last season, but it was easily the strength of the team. But a defense can only keep you in games for so long, especially when your offense has a 16-quarter touchdown drought as NMSU’s did in 2009. “There was no way we were going to be able to offset that,” Walker said. The Aggies return All-WAC cornerback Davon House. He and Jonte Green form one of the league’s best corner tandems, and Walker is optimistic about the potential in the secondary. NMSU must replace all three linebackers – and a combined 246 tackles – but this season’s new trio, led byjunior college transfer Frank Padilla, is more athletic. Defensive ends Donte Savage and Pierre Fils return after combining for 13 sacks, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 2009. New tackles David Mahoney and Tommy Stuart weren’t on campus for spring drills, but they could push for starting roles by the Sept. 11 opener against San Diego State.
2010 New Mexico State Special Teams:
Kyle Hughes returns to punt, but he won’t be the Aggies’ placekicker again. Walker used a scholarship on junior college transfer Tyler Stampler to improve a long-time deficiency at that position. Nobody shined in the return game in 2009, and it’s unclear if anyone will in 2010.

2010 New Mexico State Predictions:
Walker said he knows NMSU will be a better team. Will that result in more wins? The defense is solid and the run game has top-tier potential in the WAC. But even if the Aggies get some bounces, it’s hard to see them breaking college football’s longest bowl drought, which is entering its 51st season.
