2009 Record: 10-4 Big 12 Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Bo Pellni (Nebraska and overall: 20-8, 2 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Shawn Watson Defensive Coordinators: Carl Pellni
2010 Nebraska Players to Watch: DT Jared Crick, CB Prince Amukamara, DB Eric Hagg, LB Roy Helu, LB Rex Burkhead, WR Niles Paul, TE Mike McNeil, OG Keith Williams
2010 Nebraska Strengths:
Just two seasons ago, Nebraska’s defense was one of the worst in the nation. It has made dramatic improvement under the direction of the Pelini brothers and figures again to be the strength of the team. Helu and Burkhead are a nice 1-2 combination.
2010 Nebraska Weaknesses:
The offense showed improvement last season, but still could be the Huskers’ Achilles’ heel. The battle for the starting Quarterback spot could extend into the season. The loss of Ndamukong Suh leaves the defense short one very big impact player.
2010 Nebraska Offense:
Nebraska had to rely heavily on its defense in 2009 because of a sputtering offense. This season, the Cornhuskers will sputter into fall camp unsettled at quarterback. Zac Lee, who started 12 games last year, missed spring practice after undergoing arm surgery. That allowed sophomore Cody Green – Lee’s backup last season – and redshirt freshman Taylor Martinez to stake claims to the starting spot. Don’t expect the battle to be settled early. Overall Nebraska returns 8 starters and a half-dozen other players with starting experience. I-backs Roy Helu and Rex Burkhead could give the Huskers solid run-game production if they can stay healthy (which they couldn’t do last season). The receiving corps, with Niles Paul leading the way, should be improved The line returns four starters and could receive a big boost if newcomer Jermarcus Hardrick plays to his potential.
2010 Nebraska Defense:
The departure of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, one of the most decorated players in program history, leaves a giant hole in the middle of the defense. The Huskers also must replace four key members – defensive end Barry Turner, linebacker Phillip Dillard and safeties Larry Asante and Matt O’Hanlon – from a unit that led the nation in scoring defense and pass efficiency defense. Suh’s former running mate at tackle, Jared Crick, has All-America potential, as does cornerback Prince Amukamara. The secondary is well-stocked with experienced players, and Eric Hagg appears to emerge as a key performer in the Huskers’ Peso defense. The Peso features Hagg as a hybrid linebackerdefensive back. When opposing offenses go to the spread formation, the 6-2, 21O-pound Hagg becomes a defensive back. Against running formations, he plays like a linebacker.
2010 Nebraska Special Teams:
Alex Henery could be even busier this season than he was in 2009. Henery doubled as Nebraska’s placekicker and punter, and the staff is thinking about allowing him to handle kickoffs this season in order to redshirt fellow senior Adi Kunalic. Henery has converted 50 of 57 career field-goal attempts, making him the most accurate kicker in school history. As a punter, he averaged 41.4 yards per kick and had a league-high 30 punts downed inside the 20. The Huskers also have Niles Paul, who finished second in the league in punt and kickoff returns, and Tim Marlowe, who averaged 23.7 yards as a kickoff returner.

2010 Nebraska Predictions:
The Huskers are convinced they’re back from years of national irrelevancy. Certainly, they again appear to be the strongest team in the Big 12 North. But if the offense can’t nnd a smoother ride, Nebraska will be hard pressed to make even that next very small step to a BCS game.
