Mountain West Previews

TCU Horned Frogs – Current odds to win a National Championship: 18-1

2009- Overall record 12-1     Conference record 8-0        Home 6-1   Away 6-0

TCU 2010 Outlook – TCU comes into this season with 18/1 odds to win a National Title, the best of any mid-major school. With nine starters back on offence and seven on defense you can understand why. QB Andy Dalton leads an extremely diverse attack that will feature WR’s Jeremy Kerley and Jimmy Young as well as RB’s Matthew Tucker and Ed Wesley. LB Tank Carder and DE Wayne Daniels will anchor the defense. Both these players are potential candidates for the 2010 Rotary Lombardi Award. This is a very talented team from top to bottom and certainly capable of keeping themselves in the thick of the BCS picture.

BYU Cougars - BSC Championship Odds: 125-1

2009- Overall record 11-2     Conference record 7-1         Home 5-2   Away 6-0

BYU 2010 Outlook – The big question for BYU is who will be the starting quarterback on opening day against Washington? Right now there is a three way battle with Riley Nelson the apparent front runner. Whoever gets the call, they will have some excellent targets to throw the ball to in WR’s McKay Jacobson and Luke Ashworth. RB’s Bryan Kariya and J.J. Di Luigi will combine to fill the void left by Harvey Unga, who will most likely not be back with team after leaving school in April. The defense will have an experienced secondary led by S Andrew Rich, but could struggle up front with a number of new starters in the lineup.

Utah Utes - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 10-3     Conference record 6-2         Home 6-0    Away 4-3

Utah 2010 Outlook – This will be Utah’s final season in the MWC as it has agreed to join the PAC 10 starting in 2011. Terrance Cain and Jordan Wynn will most likely split time at quarterback since neither one clearly won the starting job this past spring. The offensive line should be the strength of the offense with four out of five starters returning from last year. There are a handful of skill players back from last year, but given the fact there are only four starters returning on defense, there will be numerous holes to fill on both sides of the ball.

Air Force Falcons - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 8-5       Conference record 5-3        Home 6-1   Away 2-4

Air Force 2010 Outlook – One of the biggest challenges for Air Force in 2010 will be rebuilding its offensive line and the majority of its defensive line as seven starters up front are gone from last year. Tim Jefferson and Conner Dietz should both get a chance to start at quarterback as each player has the experience to lead the offense. The running game will be led by RB Asher Clark and the receiving corps will be led by WR Kevin Folger. LB Andre Morris Jr. and CB Reggie Rembert will be counted on to lead the Falcons defense.

Wyoming Cowboys - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 7-6       Conference record 4-4         Home 4-3     Away 3-3

Wyoming 2010 Outlook – Wyoming will go with QB Austyn Carta-Samuels to run their no-huddle, fast paced offense that propelled them to a seven win season last year. Carta-Samuels primary targets will be WR David Leonard and RB Alvester Alexander, who are both coming off a strong performance in 2009. The Cowboys defensive line will feature three new starters, but their entire secondary is back as well as LB’s Gabe Knapton and Josh Biezuns.

UNLV Rebels - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 5-7      Conference record 3-5         Home 4-3     Away 1-4

UNLV 2010 Outlook – Omar Clayton is expected to be the starting quarterback on opening day against Wisconsin but nothing is set in stone. RB C.J. Cox will be the Rebels primary rusher and WR’s Phillip Payne and Michael Johnson will be the primary targets for the passing game. Defensively, UNLV will have to improve on last year’s 32.4 points per game allowed. With eight starters returning, they will have experience but questionable talent and depth.

San Diego State Aztecs – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 4-8        Conference record 2-6      Home 3-3    Away 1-5

San Diego State 2010 Outlook – QB Ryan Lindley returns to lead a San Diego State offense that returns six additional starters. A big bonus would be having WR Vincent Brown ready for opening day after tearing a ligament in his thumb last season. RB Brandon Sullivan, who led the team in rushing with 558 yards is also back and should be an even bigger part of this offense in 2010. The Aztecs are not known for their defense as they allowed over 30 points per game last season. With only six starters returning it is a chance for some younger players to step up and turn things around.

New Mexico Lobos – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 1-11         Conference record 1-7            Home 0-6     Away 1-5

New Mexico 2010 Outlook – New Mexico also employs a no-huddle offense to try and quickly move the ball downfield. It will have a number of options at quarterback with three or four players still vying for the job. B.R. Holbrook would appear to have the early edge but the Lobos still have Brad Gruner, who started 10 games in 2008. They have a decent pair of RB’s in Demond Dennis and Kasey Carrier and a big time receiver in Ty Kirk. On defense they return their entire secondary and most of the starting front four including DE Jonathan Rainey.

Colorado State Rams - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 3-9             Conference record 0-8           Home 2-4     Away 1-5

Colorado State 2010 Outlook – True freshman QB Pete Thomas could end up as Colorado State’s starter as he comes in as a highly touted high school recruit. The Rams will most likely keep the ball on the ground as much as possible with the return of RB’s Leonard Mason and John Mosure. They return nine starters on the defensive side of the ball, but will have to do a better job of keeping opponents out of the end zone as they gave up close to 30 points per game last year.
