2009 Record: 6-7 Big 10 Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 9 Offense, 2 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Tim Brewster (Minnesota and overall: 14-24, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Jeff Horton, Thomas Hammock Defensive Coordinators: Kevin Cosgrove. Ronnie Lee

2010 Minnesota Players to Watch: QB Adam Weber, RB Duane Bennett, RB DeLeon Eskridge, WR Troy Stoudermire, WR Da’Jon McKnight, DT Jewhan Edwards, DT Brandon Kirksey, DE Ra’Shede Hageman

2010 Minnesota Strengths:
The offense, although it struggled last season, returns almost intact, with all five starting linemen and Weber, who has started for three seasons. The key to improvement will rest on getting the offense going, and there is alot of potential with receivers Stoudermire and McKnight.

2010 Minnesota Weaknesses:
The Gophers are trying to get an offense going with their third offensive coordinator in three seasons. Horton wants to run the ball. but the Gophers are still looking for a running back worthy of being featured. The athletic defense is inexperienced.

2010 Minnesota Offense:

Nine starters return from a unit that fInished last in the Big Ten in total offense. That includes three-year starting quarterback Adam Weber and the entire line. New coordinator Jeff Horton challenged the line to be more physical. He has a mission: To run the ball well no matter what the opponent does. His goal is to use the run to take pressure off Weber, who looked lost at times last season and will be playing for yet another offensive boss. Right tackle Jeff Wills is lighter and stronger this season and fIgures to do much better in pass protection. Left tackle Dom Alford and right guard Matt Carufel should be healthy after nagging injuries last season. Weber has proven efficient when given time. Will he get that this year? And who will step forward to fIll Eric Decker’s shoes at wide receiver? The Gophers are counting on a pair of juniors – and former high school teammates – in Troy Stoudermire and Da’Jon McKnight. Stoudermire is a big play waiting to happen. McKnight has NFL size and no fear crossing the middle of the fIeld. Running backs DeLeon Eskridge and Duane Bennett return after a less-than-successful bycommittee approach last season.

2010 Minnesota Defense:

At least nine starters are being replaced. Coordinator Kevin Cosgrove is counting on athletic ability trumping inexperience. This is especially true in the front seven. Defensive tackles Jewhan Edwards and Brandon Kirksey fIgure to be the heart of the new defense, but the verdict is still out at defensive end. Tight end-turned-defensive end Ra’Shede Hageman looks the part but has yet to playa down. Speed rusher D.L. Wilhite fIgures to pick up where he left off late last year. There are three new starters at linebacker featuring good speed In the middle, Gary Tinsley has sideline-tosideline ability. On the strong side, Mike Rallis comes down from safety and fIgures to be a team leader. The biggest question is at cornerback, where the Gophers have little returning experience after sophomore Michael Carter and Ryan Collado.

2010 Minnesota Special Teams:

Eric Ellestad returns after converting on 13 of 17 fIeld goal attempts and showing a knack for making the big kick, as he did last year in an overtime victory over Syracuse, and against Air Force and Wisconsin. One challenge for him is to hone his ability to kick-off directionally. Punter Dan Orseske was highly touted as a freshman last season, but he was felled by mononucleosis after a strong start to the season. Orseske, after a medical redshirt, was impressive in the spring. Bryant Allen on punt returns and Troy Stoudermire on kick returns have big-play potential.

2010 Minnesota Predictions:

Given a difficult schedule and the young defense, the onus is squarely on Weber and the offense to pick up the pace. To improve on last season’s six-win total, the Gophers will have to move the ball and take their time doing it to take pressure off the defense.
