2009 Record: 6-7 Big 10 Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 7 Offense, 5 Defense, Punter
Coach: Mark Dantonio (Michigan State: 22-17, 3 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Don Treadwell Defensive Coordinators: Pat Narduzzi
2010 Michigan State Players to Watch: QB Kirk Cousins, WR Keshawn Martin, TE Charlie Gantt, RB Larry Caper, DT Jerel Worthy, LB Greg Jones, LB Eric Gordon, CB Chris L Rucker
2010 Michigan State Strengths:
Cousins has the weapons to quickly become a star. Jones’ return was a boon for the program. He could be a Top10 draft pick next April. Cornerback is aposition of strength, but that only matters if the Spartans pressure the quarterback.
2010 Michigan State Weaknesses:
The running game, pass rush and secondary all create some concem for the Spartans. The offensive line – specifically the right side – is young, but also promising.
2010 Michigan State Offense:
There’s no controversy at quarterback. Last season, Kirk Cousins outplayed Keith Nichol, who likely will start at wide receiver in 2010. Cousins has the potential to blossom into an All-Big Ten quarterback in his second year as a starter. The wide receiver group – Keshawn Martin, Mark Dell, B.J. Cunningham and Nichol- is very good. Cunningham had three of his four touchdowns in the first four games. Martin averaged 22.8 yards per catch, but had only 18 receptions. They’ll be better if the offensive line and running game can find a satisfactory level of consistency. The Spartans are placing a TBD tag on the starting tailback position until August. Larry Caper, a powerful sophomore at 5-11, 220 pounds, might give coach Mark Dantonio his best starting option. Edwin Baker isn’t far behind; the same is true for newcomers Nick Hill, a 5-6 water bug, and Le’Veon Bell, a 221-pound battering ram. Michigan State also boasts enviable depth at tight end, and there are steady anchors on the left side of the offensive line.
2010 Michigan State Defense:
Penn State’s Jared Odrick was the conference Defensive Player of the Year last season, but Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones could easily stake a claim to that award this season. In fact, Jones is Lindy’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year and the heart of the Spartans’ defense, the one player opposing coaches and quarterbacks have to identify before every play if they want to succeed. Rumblings persist that the Spartans will use more 3-4 fronts this season, but there was no sign of it in the spring. The dot-connecting is plausible, considering MSU’s strong depth and experience at linebacker. The success of the Spartans hinges partially on the defensive line. MSU ranked 112th nationally in pass defense last year. The team had six interceptions in 481 opponent attempts, and only Idaho and Nevada allowed more passing touchdowns than the Spartans (42). Star freshman William Gholston excites fans, but how well the veterans play around sophomore tackle Jerel Worthy is more important. Worthy is a player on the rise. He missed spring practice with a shoulder injury but will be ready for fall camp.
2010 Michigan State Special Teams:
Gone is placekicker Brett Swenson, who rewrote the school record book at the position. The Spartans will have to sweat until Dan Conroy, a walk-on, and redshirt freshman Kevin Muma solidify the spot. Punter Aaron Bates has the stuff to be an All-Big Ten pick.

2010 Michigan State Predictions:
The Spartans’ face-planted to start the 2009 season (1-3 with losses to Central Michigan, Notre Dame and Wisconsin by a total of 13 points) and late-season off-field issues called the team’s chemistry and leadership into question. With plenty of experience, the Spartans can flip the switch, but more than eight wins would be stunning. With a light early schedule, they might pick up just enough momentum to serve up a surprise.
