2009 Record: 1-11 MAC Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 19: 9 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Mike Haywood (Miami Ohio and overall: 1-11, 1 year)
Offensive Coordinators: Morris Watts Defensive Coordinators: Carl Reese
2010 Miami Ohio Players to Watch: QB Zac Dysert, RB Thomas Merriweather, WR Armand Robinson, LB Jerrell Wedge, DB Anthony Kokal
2010 Miami Ohio Strengths:
Dysert must cut down on his tumovers – 16 picks in 401 attempts last season – but he’s mostly accurate and has his top running back and receivers back from 2009. The defense plays with energy and purpose, led by Wedge at linebacker.
2010 Miami Ohio Weaknesses:
Miami doesn’t have outhouse-topenthouse talent and, despite some experience, lacks the depth it takes to win consistently. Many areas of the team, including special teams, are works In progress. Another year of seasoning could make the ‘Hawks one of the prime cuts In the MAC next year.
2010 Miami Ohio Offense:
Sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert might be bored during some fall practices. Coach Mike Haywood said there will be days when the RedHawks don’t bother to throw a single pass. Haywood wants a run-dominant offense. More than that, he wants a disciplined one that doesn’t give up the ball easily. In truth, more will be required of Dysert, who was solid as a redshirt freshman, accounting for 17 of Miami’s 25 touchdowns (five rushing, 12 passing), if the offense is to turn the proverbial corner. It helps that the RedHawks have all five starters back on the line and additional talented underclassmen pushing for time. Dysert was crisp in the spring game, completing 23 of 25 passes for 137 yards, but that’s hardly measurable progress. Running back Thomas Merriweather has a physical style and showed improvement as a receiver. He hasn’t been productive in the red zone – three of his four rushing touchdowns came vs. Charleston Southern last season – and needs more help around him to become an All-MAC runner. The RedHawks have top receivers Armand Robinson and Jamal Rogers back. Neither provided the consistent big-play element Miami needs, but Robinson has that potential, as does promising true freshman Nicholas HarwelL Keep an eye on sophomore tight end Kendrick Bruton, who is capable of adding a downfield dimension from the slot.
2010 Miami Ohio Defense:
Miami’s secondary was a glaring weakness against the spate of MAC spread offenses last season, and Haywood used many combinations and more than a dozen players at the four spots in the spring. Nothing is concrete, but Haywood will go with the most physical and “football savvy” foursome. Linebacker Jerrell Wedge had 114 tackles last season, fourth best in the MAC, and led the conference with 18.5 tackles for loss. He is flanked by returning starters Evan Harris and DeAndre Gilmore, players who also nnished among the team’s top 10 tacklers. Free safety Anthony Kokalleads the secondary. He had 105 tackles in 12 games last season and forced a fumble against Toledo that helped give Miami its only win. Strong safety Jordan Gafford was productive (64 tackles) before suffering an injury in the eighth game. Jason Semmes, a transfer from Iowa, gives Miami’s defensive line more depth and experience, but there’s no established standout in this very young group.
2010 Miami Ohio Special Teams:
Kicker Trevor Cook returned last season after sitting out the entire 2008 season and made just 7 of 12 attempts, including a 55-yarder. Punter Jim Broadway had six punts downed inside the 20 in his four starts, but doesn’t have great leg strength.

2010 Miami Ohio Predictions:
Turn the other way when the RedHawks open the season in Gainesville. There might be more bad and ugly in year two of the Haywood Era in Miami, but the growing pains won’t last. He’s taking steps to “change the culture” of the RedHawks. Measured progress is likely this season, with the runways cleared for a turnaround in 2011.
