2009 Record: 7-6 C-USA Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 15: 7 Offense, 7 Defense, Punter

Coach: Doc Holliday (At Marshall and overall: 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Tony Petersen, Bill Legg Defensive Coordinators: Chris Rippon

2010 Marshall Players to Watch: LB Marlo Harvey, TE Lee Smith, DE Vinny Curry, DT Michael Janac, RB Martin Ward, WR Antavious Wilson

2010 Marshall Strengths:
The depth at wide receiver nicely fits Holliday’s spread offense. The key will be getting consistency out of the quarterback position. Mario Harvey has achance to be one of the nation’s best at linebacker.

2010 Marshall Weaknesses:
Shoring up the pass defense Is amust after the Herd ranked 90th in the nation ayear ago. UTEP burned them for 517 yards and five touchdown passes in the regular-season finale. QB Brian Anderson threw 13 Interceptions last season. and he’ll probably put the ball In the air more this season.

2010 Marshall Offense:

Senior quarterback Brian Anderson threw for 2,646 yards and 14 scores last season, but he is joined in competition by redshirt freshman A.J. Graham, Florida’s Mr. Football two years ago. And there’s more. Quarterback Willy Korn, a prime prospect at Clemson in 2007, transferred to Marshall after an injury-plagued run with the Tigers. He is a graduate student and has two years of eligibility remaining. The wide receiving corps, led by a stellar playmaker in Antavious Wilson, is deep. He led the Thundering Herd with 60 catches for 724 yards and three touchdowns last season. Aaron Dobson averaged 24.1 yards per catch last year. Courtney Edmonson is back after suffering a season-ending injury in last season’s first game. Tight end Lee Smith has 20 starts and is known for his blocking, as well as sure hands; he caught 23 balls for 335 yards last season. New head coach Doc Holliday will have some talent in the backfield with the duo of Martin Ward and Andre Booker. Ward averaged 4.8 yards per carry and rushed for 136 yards in his first start, a win over SMD. The Thundering Herd returns three starters on the line, led by center Chad Schofield.

2010 Marshall Defense:

Linebacker Mario Harvey will be the catalyst for the defense. Harvey, who made 117 tackles last season, has a strong complement at middle linebacker in Kellen Harris, who had 71 stops, six for loss. Holliday will have a deep defensive front as Michael Janac has 21 starts at both tackle and defensive end; he will start at defensive tackle. The Herd will miss Albert McClellan on the end, but Vinny Curry should be able to step into McClellan’s spot after he was a tough assignment for opposing offensive lines, garnering 59 tackles, 8.5 for loss. Cornerback DeQuan Bembry was indefinitely suspended in the spring; he made 53 tackles and three interceptions a year ago. D.J. Wingate is scheduled to start at one corner, with returning starter Ahmed Shakoor opposite him. Omar Brown and Donald Brown will man the middle of the secondary. Omar Brown was third in tackles with 73 last season, and he defended 10 passes.

2010 Marshall Special Teams:

Tyler Warner is set to take over the kicking duties, replacing Craig Ratanamorn, a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2009. Kase Whitehead returns for his third year at punter. He averaged 39.2 yards per punt, but the Herd netted only 33.4, so punt coverage will be a major point of emphasis. Andre Booker should be a stalwart on both return units. He had a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown in the bowl victory over Ohio.

2010 Marshall Predictions:

Holliday, long noted as one of the top recruiters in the nation, was the defensive backs coach on Florida’s 2006 national championship team. His personal ties to the West Virginia region and his recruiting prowess are promising. In his first year, it looks like he should have the Herd fighting for another bowl.
