2009 Record: 4-8 Big East Record: 1-6 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 9 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker,
Coach: Charlie Strong (Louisville 1st year)
Offensive Coordinators: Mike Sanford Defensive Coordinators: Vance Bedford
2010 Louisville Players to Watch: RB Victor Anderson. WR Doug Beaumont. WR Josh Chichester. QB Adam Froman, CMarlo Benavides. LB Brandon Heath, CB Johnny Patrick. LB Antwon Canady
2010 Louisville Strengths:
Louisville has aveteran offensive line and good experience and depth at running back, led by Anderson. The key will be to keep hIm and Bilal Powell healthy. Froman needs to develop confIdence as the passing game takes shape and tries to be more productive in the spread.
2010 Louisville Weaknesses:
Most of the issues are on defense, where Louisville lost Its top four tacklers from an Ineffective unit. Strong will look to fInd combInations on his defensive line. which was easily the biggest problem ayear ago. Louisville lacked any sort of physicality and gave up 23 rushIng touchdowns, while four opponents registered more than 200 yards rushing.
2010 Louisville Offense:
Louisville’s floundering offense was Huh in the nation last season in points per game, so new coordinator Mike Sanford will implement a spread attack to try to take advantage of the skills of senior quarterback Adam Froman. Froman threw six touchdown passes and five interceptions last season as he split time with Justin Burke, who is still challenging for the job with Will Stein and Luke Woodley. Doug Beaumont and Josh Chichester return as key cogs in a thin receiving unit. Beaumont was second in receptions and receiving yards last season while Chichester, at 6-8, should be a formidable possession receiver. In the backfIeld, Victor Anderson returns from injury. He missed four of the Cardinals’ last five games, yet still led Louisville in rushing with 473 yards. Darius Ashley and Bilal Powell offer depth in the backfield; Ashley arrived on the scene with a 164yard performance in a loss to West Virginia. Powell is an explosive runner who is looking to rebound from a tough ending to the season in ‘og. Louisville’s line returns all five starters, led by center Mario Benavides, who started all 12 games last season as a redshirt freshman.
2010 Louisville Defense:
New head coach Charlie Strong, noted for his prowess as a defensive coordinator, will try to improve a unit that gave up 371.1 yards and 26.3 points per game last season. In putting together a first-class staff, one of his initial hires was 17-year coaching veteran Vance Bedford, the Florida cornerbacks coach for the past two seasons, as his defensive coordinator. With only four starters returning, jobs are up for grabs. Greg Scruggs and Malcolm Tatum will have the most experience on the defensive line. Scruggs could move inside to shore up the depth on the front, as William Savoy and Tatum could start on the ends. Newcomer De’Antre Rhodes, a four-star defensive tackle, could figure in the line scheme. Rhodes (6-3, 28S) was ranked by Rivals.com as the NO.3 prep school defensive tackle in the nation. Brandon Heath and Antwon Canady are retuning seniors at linebacker. The secondary will see lots of competition, as cornerback Johnny Patrick is the lone returning starter. Strong moved running back Darius Ashley, the second leading rusher a year ago, to cornerback to shore up a thin secondary. Redshirt freshman Hakeem Smith proved to be a playmaker in spring practice and could vie for a starting spot in the defensive backfield as welL
2010 Louisville Special Teams:
Chris Philpott was s-for-s last season on fieldgoal attempts, and he made a s6-yard field goal in a live game situation this spring. Punter Jon Payne will try to upgrade the position; Corey Goettesch netted only 35.6 yards per punt a year ago. Positions on the return units are up for grabs. Anderson, Johnny Patrick and Jacques Caldwell could fill those spots.

2010 Louisville Predictions:
Strong has lots of work in front of him in reteaching fundamentals and developing depth. It may take two more recruiting classes before the Cardinals will be able to vie for the top spot in the Big East. Six wins and a middle of the conference finish would probably foster a bowl bid, which would be an excellent springboard into the new era.
