2009 Record: 5-7 MAC Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 18: 9 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Doug Martin (Kent State and overall: 24-46, 6 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Doug Martin Defensive Coordinators: Pete Rekstis
2010 Kent State Players to Watch: QB Spencer Keith, RB Eugene Jarvis, WR Tyshon Goode, MLB Cobranl Mixon, DB Brian Lainhart, DB Dan Hartman, DE/OLB Monte Simmons
2010 Kent State Strengths:
Injuries carved Into Kent State’s depth In 2009. With many starters back and senior leadership on both sides, the Flashes should begin to win the close games that kept them out of the postseason ayear ago. The secondary, special teams and backfield are top-notch.
2010 Kent State Weaknesses:
The team’s depth in a sophomore heavy receiver corps is an unknown. The right side of the a-line is all new. The offense as a whole has to be more efficient and find more points – than it did last season.
2010 Kent State Offense:
Two things kept the Golden Flashes from being the surprise MAC East contender in 200g: A spate of season-ending injuries and an offense that landed a lot of jabs, but almost never delivered a timely roundhouse. Coach Doug Martin increased late-practice tempo in the spring to help Kent’s experienced roster prepare for late-game situations. He’ll rely on two players who were injured to end last season – quarterback Spencer Keith and running back Eugene Jarvis – to carry the offense to a higher level of potency than the 19.2-point scoring average it had in ‘og. Keith, out for most of the last two games in ‘og with a shoulder injury, passed for 2,417 yards and 14 touchdowns in six starts. Jarvis returns for a sixth season. He didn’t overdo it in spring sessions, still recovering from the lacerated kidney that put him on the sideline last season. Jarvis is 564 yards away from the school rushing record, but Martin will rotate in at least three other tailbacks. Jacquise Terry, Dri Archer and Andre Flowers are capable, but none has the darting quickness or speed of the 5-5 Jarvis. Archer, a sophomore, is small but explosive and expects to have a big role in the return game. Top target Tyshon Goode might be the most promising sophomore in the MAC. He set school freshman records with 53 catches for 755 yards and five touchdowns.
2010 Kent State Defense:
Seven defensive starters are back, including six seniors. Middle linebacker Cobrani Mixon had 108 tackles as a junior – tied for 34th in the nation with g.g stops per game – and has the agility, size and bulk to play every down. The safety tandem of Brian Lainhart (15 career interceptions, 32 career starts) and Dan Hartman can cover plenty of ground. Lainhart had seven interceptions last season, but could be challenged to repeat that total unless the Flashes replicate what was a ferocious pass rush (33 sacks). Squatty nose tackle Quinton Rainey started 10 games last season and had 2g tackles -11 for loss. He’s not a pass rusher, although his agility makes him a consistent disruptor in the backfield. Defensive end/outside linebacker Monte Simmons (16 career sacks) was a second-team All-MAC pick a year ago. He was expected to return healthy from a quadriceps injury that kept him out of spring drills.
2010 Kent State Special Teams:
All-MAC punter Matt Rinehart and kicker Freddy Cortez return. Rinehart led the conference with a 40.9-yard average in 2009, and Cortez hit 13 of 19 field-goal attempts. Eugene Jarvis and Dri Archer (kickoffs) have big-play potential as return men.

2010 Kent State Predictions:
Kent State is a MAC rarity. The team didn’t have to replace a top coach, quarterback or skill player in the spring. With experience everywhere and depth in all the right spots, the Golden Flashes should be in the running for the East title and in position to make a postseason trip for the first time since the 1972 Tangerine Bowl.
