2009 Record: 11-2 Big 10 Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 6 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Kirk Ferentz (Iowa and overall: 81-55, 11 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Ken O’Keefe Defensive Coordinators: Norm Parker

2010 Iowa Players to Watch: QB Ricky Stanzi, DE Adrian Claybom, DT Karl Klug, WR Derrell Johnson-Koullanos, WR Marvin McNutt, SS Tyler Sash, LB Jeremiha Hunter, P Ryan Donahue

2010 Iowa Strengths:
The defense will be the primary strength, with a lot of that coming from a defensive line that retums all four starters from 2009. Stanzl will be a third-year starter and knows how to win. Johnson-Koullanos and McNutt are a solid duo.

2010 Iowa Weaknesses:
Iowa’s offensive line has three new starters and lacks the bulk that has been the signature of Iowa’s O-Iines in the past two seasons. Kicker could be an Issue. Iowa has two contestants – Daniel Murray and Trent Mossbrucker.

2010 Iowa Offense:

The offensive line is the thing for Iowa from now until week one. The Hawkeyes have three new faces up front – center James Ferentz, guard Adam Gettis and tackle Markus Zusevics – and a certain level of uncertainty. Coach Kirk Ferentz said six players have settled in, including center Josh Koeppel, who was slowed during spring by an ankle injury. This is sort of a tlbill is due” season for the line, especially with All-Big Ten tackle Bryan Bulaga leaving a year early for the NFL. Quarterback Ricky Stanzi fInished the year as a 56.2 percent passer (171 of 304) with 17 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions in nine full games and a portion of Iowa’s 10th. Yes, he had 15 interceptions (five vs. Indiana), but his record as a starter is a sterling 18-4. Running back is a race between last year’s l-1A duo – Adam Robinson (834 yards, five touchdowns) and Brandon Wegher (641 yards; freshman-record eight TDs) – and Jewel Hampton, a true freshman phenom in 10 8 who suffered a torn ACL and missed last season. Senior wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos needs 30 receptions and 400 yards to become Iowa’s career leader in receptions and receivingyards. After moving from quarterback, junior Marvin McNutt led Iowa with an average of 19.8 yards per reception and eight touchdowns last year.

2010 Iowa Defense:

The defensive line will be the Hawkeyes’ calling card Defensive end Adrian Clayborn is positioned for national awards. Last season he had 20 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks, third in the Big Ten in both categories. In his fIrst season as a starter, junior end Broderick Binns fInished with 10 tackles for loss, six sacks and a team-high nine pass breakups. Senior Karl Klug was a revelation at tackle with 13 tackles for loss, fIve pass breakups and four sacks. Senior Christian Ballard made the move inside from end and made nine tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Senior linebacker Jeremiha Hunter returns for his third season as a starter on the weak side. Senior Jeff Tarpinian was named the starter in the middle during spring practice. Free safety Brett Greenwood will be a fourth-year starter. Strong safety Tyler Sash begins his third season as starter and is one of the top ball-hawks in the country.

2010 Iowa Special Teams:

Senior Daniel Murray tied for the Big Ten lead with 19 fIeld goals last season. He’ll be challenged by sophomore Trent Mossbrucker, who hit 13 of 15 in ’08 before redshirting last year. Punter Ryan Donahue averaged 40.9 yards and had 12 punts of 50-plus yards last season.

2010 Iowa Predictions:

The Hawkeyes might be an experienced offensive lineman or two away from knocking Ohio State off the Big Ten throne, but they will be in the Big Ten’s top tier. The defense and special teams are strong enough to force percentage ball and should land Iowa in a New Year’s Day bowl.
