2009 Record: 8-5 WAC Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Pat Hill (Fresno State and overall: 100-66, 13 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Jeff Grady, Derek Frazier Defensive Coordinators: Randy Stewart

2010 Fresno State Players to Watch: QB Ryan Colburn, WR Jamel Hamler, OL Andrew Jackson, DE Chris Carter, LB Ben Jacobs, PK Kevin Goessling

2010 Fresno State Strengths:
With eight starters returning on both sides of the football, experience will be the weapon of choice for Hill. Carter is one of the league’s best defensive ends, and Jacobs was afellow first-team All-WAC selection in 2009.

2010 Fresno State Weaknesses:
The loss of RB Ryan Mathews is ahuge obstacle to overcome. The Bulldogs also lost half their defensive secondary. Returning starting DE Kenny Borg had to give up football (knee); slimmed-down former DT Chris Lewis takes his spot.

2010 Fresno State Offense:

For years Pat Hill lived by the run and died by it on more than one occasion. The veteran coach would fling it around the yard now and again, but he always went back to dive to the right, dive to the left. It was his comfort zone. That might be about to change. With Ryan Mathews, the nation’s leading rusher, opting out early for the NFL, Hill conceded he might be forced to air it out in the coming campaign. Senior quarterback Ryan Colburn was third in the WAC and 20th nationally in pass efficiency in 2009. He threw for 2,459 yards and 19 touchdowns. And he might not even be the opening-day starter. That role could land on the shoulder pads of sophomore Derek Carr, who split time with Colburn in the spring. Hill liked both of his quarterbacks in the closing scrimmage and now has to wait until fall camp before seeing who emerges. The top two leading rushers are gone, but the Bulldogs have a stellar line, led by senior guard Andrew Jackson and senior tackle Kenny Wiggins. These guys can open holes for the running game and protect the passer long enough for him to make big plays downfield.

2010 Fresno State Defense:

Defensive end Chris Carter and middle linebacker Ben Jacobs, both seniors, were selected to the first-team All-WAC last year. Carter had 13 tackles for loss, including five sacks. Jacobs led the Bulldogs in tackles with 106. These two anchor a unit that returns eight starters, six of them seniors. The secondary also looks promising with the return of senior cornerback Desia Dunn and senior free safety Lorne Bell, who was a 2009 second-team All-WAC selection with 65 tackles. Bell supports the run as well as anyone. Hill also has a newcomer expected to join the fray in freshman corner L.J. Jones.

2010 Fresno State Special Teams:

This area is rarely a cause for concern for Fresno State. The Bulldogs welcome back talented placekicker Kevin Goessling. The junior was named first-team All-WAC last season, in part for making 15 consecutive field goals en route to scoring 100 points. The Bulldogs will have to find a punter, but their ability to block kicks and set up big returns on kickoffs and punts continues to serve them well.

2010 Fresno State Predictions:

If Fresno State didn’t have to deal with Boise State, the Bulldogs likely would be the best overall team in the WAC. But that is not the case. The Broncos have ruled of late, leaving Hill on the outside, looking in at all those league championships. He has the talent and experience to give Boise State a go. But the Bulldogs have to travel to the blue field this year … and that makes it doubly difficult.
