I am happy FSU made it this far because I think they can give the Hokies a pretty good game. FSU has a great history against Virginia Tech and this is their best team in quite a few years. The key for them is going to be on defense. VT wants to run the ball with their great RB tandem the Noles run defense has to stand up. If they can force the game to become a duel between Christian Ponder and Tyrod Taylor than I really like the Seminoles chances. FSU is being spotted more than a FG which is what I think will decide this game in the end. FSU’s defense is only giving up 17.8ppg. If they give up much more than that they will be on the losing end. It could be a slugfest.
Virginia Tech was written off after starting 0-2 but what was lost in that poor start was that they were very close to ending all that Boise talk before it got started. Their loss to James Madison was shocking but now they are 10-2 which would have seemed about right at the beginning of the season. As they have been running through the ACC they have been barely challenged. Only one of their eight conference games was won by less than ten points. The defense this year has been below expectations established by the past. They are not giving up a ton of points but they are actually in the bottom half of all teams in rushing yards allowed. Lucky for them that is an area where FSU struggles.
Going back all the way to 1988 FSU is 9-1 against Virginia Tech. A bunch of those games were in their heyday but it also includes the 2005 ACC Championship. A repeat of that performance is going to be a big challenge for FSU. This not a good matchup for them which means that it might come to coaching and special teams. If that is the case you have to favour the Hokies.
Game Prediction: This game has the shortest spread of any championship games this weekend and I expect it to be a close one. Look for VT to take the lead early with FSU being able to counter. FSU will have the chance to win it late but won’t be able to make the plays necessary to win. Can anyone remember a signature Christian Ponder moment?
Score Prediction:
Virginia Tech – 27
Florida State – 24
The spread is -4 for the Hokies…Unless this drops below 3 points take the Noles.
