2009 Record: 5-7 Sun Belt Record: 5-3 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 3 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Howard Schnellenberger (Florida Atlantic: 53-55, 10 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Darryl Jackson Defensive Coordinators: Kurt Van Valkenburgh
2010 Florida Atlantic Players to Watch: QB Jeff Van Kamp, RB Alfred Morris, WR Lester Jean, TE Rob Housler, DE Kevin Cyrille, CB Tarvoris Hill, CB Tavious Polo, SS Marcus Bartels
2010 Florida Atlantic Strengths:
With nine starters returning, the defense has the chance to make big strides. The secondary looks to be the strength of the unit with all four starters retuming. Morris, who led the league in rushing last year, is the biggest threat offensively.
2010 Florida Atlantic Weaknesses:
There are issues on offense everywhere but running back. The line will have five new starters, and there is no experienced backup at quarterback. Wide receiver is also thin. The defensive front seven is going to have to step up against the run.
2010 Florida Atlantic Offense:
After taking over for an injured Rusty Smith last year, quarterback Jeff Van Camp led the Owls to three wins in their last five games, completing 62 percent of his passes over that span with 12 touchdowns against only two interceptions. He’ll have returning starter Lester Jean, last year’s NO.2 receiver (38 catches, four touchdowns), and Avery Holley (22 catches) as his prime targets. The Owls also will welcome back Rob Housler at tight end. Housler, with two veteran seniors in front of him last year, redshirted in 2009. He had 32 catches in 2008. The only other returning starter on offense is running back Alfred Morris. Morris ran for 1,392 yards as a sophomore to earn fIrst-team All-Sun Belt honors, topping the 100-yard mark in seven games. Senior Willie Floyd could help if he can stay healthy. The big questions are up front. With center Ryan Wischnefski’s decision to give up football to concentrate on his post-graduate studies, the Owls must replace all fIve starters, and there is virtually no experience to choose from. One player does have starting experience, but both of sophomore Andy Czruprynski’s starts came on defense. A projected starter up front on defense, he was moved during spring practice to help out the offense.
2010 Florida Atlantic Defense:
The defense needs to take a major step after giving up 453 yards a game last year. Kurt Van Valkenburgh takes over for Kirk Hoza as coordinator and will continue to coach linebackers. Nine starters return, headed by all-conference candidate Kevin Cyrille at end and top tackler Marcus Bartels at strong safety. Cyrille had a team-best 11 tackles for loss, including three sacks, last year. To go with his 112 stops, Bartels had an interception, a blocked kick and a forced fumble. Bartels is one of four returning starters in the secondary. Senior Ed Alexander (three career interceptions) mans the free safety spot, and seniors Tavious Polo and Tarvoris Hill are back at the comers. They each had an interception last year. Seniors Michael Lockley, the No.2 tackler in 2009 with 97 stops, and Malik Eugene, who led the team in recovered fumbles with three, are returning starters at linebacker. In addition to CYrille, tackle Dino Cox (three sacks) is a returning starter up front. Senior end Daniel Joseph, who started eight games last year, had to contend with a shoulder problem in the spring and faces a challenge from junior Jamere Johnson.
2010 Florida Atlantic Special Teams:
Senior kicker Ross Gornall (8 of 12 on field goals) and junior punter Mickey Groody (40.6 average) return. Polo returns punts (5.3 average) and kickoffs (17.0), and sophomore Xavier Stinson also has experience running back kickoffs.

2010 Florida Atlantic Predictions:
The Owls have a some playmakers on offense but will need to get an offensive line together to take advantage of them. The defense should improve, but it has a long way to go after last year’s debacle.
