2009 Record: 9-5 C-USA Record: 7-1 2010 Returning Starters: 7: 5 Offense, 2 Defense
Coach: Ruffin McNeill (At East Carolina: 1st year)
Offensive Coordinators: Lincoln Riley Defensive Coordinators: Brian Mitchell
2010 East Carolina Players to Watch: QB Brad Womick, QB Rio Johnson, WR Dwayne Harris, OT Willie Smith, OG D.J. Scott, OG Cory Dowless, CB Travis Simmons, CB Emanuel Davis
2010 East Carolina Strengths:
Harris is a playmaker who will give ECU’s young Quarterbacks a security blanket. The wide receiver position is deep, giving hope that the spread can produce big numbers in the Texas Tech-style scheme. Three experienced offensive linemen give ECU the core of what should be astrong front wall.
2010 East Carolina Weaknesses:
East Carolina’s defense was ravaged by graduation, and there are new blitz packages to learn. There is Inexperience at Quarterback as ECU jumps into league play right off the bat by hosting Tulsa and Memphis before three challenging road games – at Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Southern Miss.
2010 East Carolina Offense:
New head coach Ruffin McNeill, the former defensive coordinator at Texas Tech, hired Lincoln Riley to install the Red Raiders’ pass-heavy spread offense. Riley was the former receivers coach at Tech. lhe Pirates have the talent and depth at wide receiver to make it work. Dwayne Harris, who caught 83 passes for 978 yards in 2009, could see his numbers soar in the new “Air Raid” passing game. Harris became ECU’s all-time leader in receptions last season. Junior Darryl Freeney was second in receptions last season with 48, and he had three games with more than 100 receiving yards. Replacing quarterback Patrick Pinkney is the biggest variable. Sophomore Brad Wornick, redshirt freshman Rio Johnson and sophomore Josh Jordan should provide ECU with healthy August competition. Wornick, the scout team quarterback last season, might have had a slight edge coming out of spring ball. Jonathan Williams and redshirt freshman Michael Dobson are likely to share the load at running back. Williams, who has had trouble with injuries and suspensions throughout his career, could be ready for a breakout season.
2010 East Carolina Defense:
McNeill, a defensive back during his playing days at ECU, will welcome back a fearless leader in his secondary in cornerback Emanuel Davis. Travis Simmons is the only other returning starter on defense and should start at the opposite corner. Davis had 69 tackles, 12 deflections and two interceptions a year ago. On the line, senior Josh Smith offers the most experience. He had four sacks last season. At linebacker, McNeill has less experience with which to work, although Dustin Lineback is penciled in as a senior starter on the weakside. He played in 10 games last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury. McNeill gained national attention for his unpredictable blitz scheme at Texas Tech, and he will use the same style of defense at ECU. That should help improve the Pirates’ total of 28 sacks from last season. Myriad blitz packages should also help the Pirates improve on a pass defense that allowed 258 passing yards per game last season.
2010 East Carolina Special Teams:
Harris is also a standout performer on the return teams, where he was the 2009 C-USA Special Teams Player of the Year, totaling 1,000 kickoff return yards and three touchdowns via those kickoff returns. In the kicking game, Ben Ryan will take over Ben Hartman’s spot. Ryan nailed all 10 of his extra point attempts last season, but missed two field goal attempts. Freshman Matt Millisor and senior Nathan Przestrzelski will compete for the punting job.

2010 East Carolina Predictions:
McNeill has to fill the big shoes of Skip Holtz, who left for South Florida in January after leading the Pirates to four consecutive bowl games and back-to-back C-USA championships. Nothing major is expected of McNeill in his first season as he puts in new schemes on both sides while working with only seven returning starters.
