2009 Record: 5-7 ACC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 8 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: David Cutdiffe (Duke and overall: 9-15, 2 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Kurt Roper, Matt Luke Defensive Coordinators: Marion Hobby, Jim Knowles
2010 Duke Players to Watch: QB Sean Renfree, WR Donovan Varner, WR Conner Vernon, CBryan Morgan, SMatt Daniels, LB Damian Thornton, KWill Snyderwine
2010 Duke Strengths:
The Blue Devils are loaded at wide receiver and have aQuarterback In Renfree, though young, who already has proven himself competent. The program has grown enough to stay competitive in most games, making Snyderwine apossible difference-maker at kicker.
2010 Duke Weaknesses:
Duke couldn’t run the ball in 2009 and probably can’t get away with that this year given the relative inexperience under center. The Blue Devils failed to produce much of apass rush In 2009; this year, they’re not nearly as deep up front.
2010 Duke Offense:
Duke must overcome the loss of a proline passer, but the Blue Devils feature plenty of proven passcatchers and a quarterback who does have some history with them. Gone to graduation is Thad Lewis, who set most of the school’s career passing marks, but Lewis was pushed for playing time early in his senior season by Sean Renfree. Now it’s Renfree’s job, with the main concern being his· health. He saw action in nve games as a redshirt freshman in 2009, highlighted by two touchdown passes in less than a quarter that rallied Duke past Army in his debut. But Renfree tore the ACL in his right knee late in the season and sat out spring practice. Duke has proven weapons. Receivers Donovan Varner (a nrst-team All-ACC pick), Austin Kelly and Conner Vernon became the nrst trio in school history to top 50 receptions each in the same season. Duke does need more help from the running game. The Blue Devils ranked ninth in the nation in passing last season, but last in rushing. They have talented backs like Jay Hollingsworth and Desmond Scott, but the line, which returns three starters, must signincantly improve its run blocking.
2010 Duke Defense:
The front line is the primary concern for the defense, where the Blue Devils lost four-year starter Vince Oghobaase and Ayanga Okpokowuruk. To make matters worse, promising prospect John Drew – who played in every game as a true freshman – was dismissed from the program in the offseason because of his alleged involvement in a gun-related crime on campus. To help with the depth concern, and with the arrival of Jim Knowles as co-defensive coordinator, the Blue Devils may decide to go more often with three defensive linemen and move away from the 4-3 look. Several players along the front, led by Charlie Hatcher, Wes Oglesby and Patrick Egboh, may be asked to play multiple positions. Duke also lost two of its most productive players behind the front in linebacker Vincent Rey and cornerback Leon Wright. But the Blue Devils retur:n everyone else at linebacker and have the speediest secondary they’ve featured in recent memory, led by veterans Matt Daniels at safety and Chris Rwabukamba at corner.
2010 Duke Special Teams:
Walk-on Will Snyderwine seized the placekicking job a month into the 2009 season and never lqst his grip, nnishing among the nation’s leaders with: 17 neld goals on 20 attempts, including a s-for-s showing between 40 and 49 yards. The Blue Devils, however, need to improve their punting and their return games. Punter Kevin Jones returns after being ranked last in the ACC in punting last season.

2010 Duke Predictions:
Coach David Cutcliffe’s nrst two teams at Duke combined to win nine games after the school had totaled 10 wins in the eight seasons before his arrivaL Now, Cutcliffe has an abundance of youth in the mix. The Blue Devils should be knocking on the door of a .500 season, but the youth makes it all the more unpredictable.
