The road to the BCS national title game is winding down and with only a handful of match ups left on each team’s college football betting schedule, this weekend features some crucial contests for the five teams at the top. Each of the top ranked teams will take to the football field this Saturday, but as it turns out the biggest headlines may be the ones that are being made off the field.
While No. 1 Oregon will make the trip to California for a PAC-10 showdown with the Golden Bears, No. 2 Auburn will host Georgia perhaps wishing they were the team that was playing away from home. That’s because of recent online sports betting allegations against Heisman trophy candidate and Tigers’ quarterback Cam Newton, who has come under fire recently for potentially accepting bribe money in order to sign on with Auburn. Head coach Gene Chizik refused to comment on the issue, which reportedly stems from two Mississippi State officials that were told directly by Newton and his father Cecil that the signal caller would sign on with whatever team provided him with the best pay per head situation. The Tigers still need wins over the Bulldogs and defending national champion Crimson Tide in consecutive weeks to have a shot at getting to the BCS title game, but now have the lingering presence of this report hanging over their heads. The Ducks will have no such distraction heading in to California, where they are 0-3 since former offense coordinator Jeff Tedford took over as the Golden Bears’ head coach. Oregon ranks first in the country on offense, but will need to find a way to put up points against a head coach that knows their system inside and out.
Right behind Oregon and Auburn is No. 3 TCU, which is coming off of their most impact football betting win of the season following a 47-7 beatdown of the previously undefeated Utes. The Horned Frogs now head back to Fort Werth looking to clinch a share of the conference title and keep their perfect season going with a victory over San Diego State. TCU has dominated the Aztecs by an average of nearly 30 points over the years, and although this San Diego State team is much-improved, this could be yet another blowout win. The final undefeated team in college football is No. 4 Boise State, which is gunning for its third consecutive undefeated season. The Broncos ran all over Hawaii last weekend for 732 yards, but that barely registered on the BCS radar as Boise State didn’t budge in the rankings.
No. 5 LSU will welcome Louisiana-Monroe to town as the nation’s top-ranked one-loss team. While a BCS title berth may seem like an unrealistic goal at this point in the season, the Tigers are right there in the SEC and a lock to get a Bowl game if they can finish their season strong. LSU has won 30 straight non-conference games at Baton Rouge.
